seems like the burn peoples clothes strategy would have mostly solved this ambush no? if all the weak marines were killed of they would probably not be able to use their ships or cannons properly. the south with no strong marines should thus have been a walk in the park.

i guess it might make sense for him to be self-centered enough to not consider/ care about her feelings at all in this. obviously she would say that this is way worse but mc just wants her alive for hia oqn gratification. stupid (and not what I would prefer to read) but maybe logical.
