no. he could have simply renounced his son's status as heir and then exiled him far, far away (as has functionally happened right now). there was no need to bring death into it. now there's hatred and a probably insurmountable level of resentment from the few family members who cared for the kid (as well as the kid himself). but they seem to be able to mostly ignore their initial feelings (thinking of that mother), so whatever. pity the kid I suppose.
