True, it's unfortunate, but it wasn't viewed as a good weapon even in the middle ages. It's too short, difficult to use and it's only boon is that it was easy to carry. A Master swordsman with 10 years of sword training under his belt would be hard pressed trying to win a fight against someone who uses a spear with 6 months worth of practice.
