Betrayal

"He has her," Nathaniel said as he let out a breath of relief after ending the call with Ryan. "She's safe and he doesn't think Jay suspects a thing."

"Thank God," Maya leaned back in her seat, allowing herself to finally relax.

Nathaniel got up and hugged his fiance tightly. He had been so worried, so anxious about his sister falling into the hands of a man he thought was his closest friend.

"I can't believe we trusted him," Maya hissed.

"It's not your fault, it's not our fault," Nathaniel told her as he gently stroked her back.

He knew that the guilt was gnawing at her, just as it was with him.

"He played his role well, Maya," Nico said as he joined in on the conversation. "We all thought he was our friend, we trusted him, let him into our homes—"

"And into our hearts," Maya hissed.

Nathaniel had no doubt she was thinking of all those years that she had let Jay be more than a friend.
