The moment Damon arrived home, he could hear the soft chatter of voices coming from the dining room as he stepped inside, and the familiar scent of his housekeeper's cooking greeted him.
"Daddy!" Emily hurried over to him with a broad smile and he wrapped her in a warm hug for a moment, drawing comfort from her.
Jessica watched him and wondered what was wrong with him. Even though he usually related this way with Emily, for some reason she could tell that he didn't seem exactly fine.
"You're back. How was your day?" Lilian asked pleasantly as she descended the stairs.
"It was alright," he said as he let go of Emily. As he straightened, his gaze fell on Jessica, who was seated at the table, and she met his gaze, her expression carefully neutral.
Damon returned his gaze to his mother, "How was your day?" he asked her casually, though there was a deeper curiosity behind his words.
