Apostle of the Forgotten Ordain

The mortal soul is one of the most potent and unpredictable creations brought upon by God unto the world. Shaped from his likeness and brought to life with shared breath— a creation that sat higher than the beasts that roamed the realm created by the almighty to shelter his creations. God blessed his first pair of mortals with plentiful gifts, cherished them, and tended them like children. An angel questioned the reason as to why God loved this creation of flesh and bones so much. This angel looked upon God's creation like vermin— loathing them with passion. He questioned the sanity of God, stepping into this throne room, and declared that he cherished these lower creations more than the creations he created with light— them, the angels. But God replied silently to the accusation of the angel. It left a terrible resolve within the angel. He claimed that how can a mere vermin be blessed with more gifts than those who sat along with the presence of God? His tongue whispered to the other angels, gathering them under his wings and silently questioning the creator. But he needs more than angels to prove that God was mistaken and foolish. A tree bloomed from an unreached space of God's paradise, bearing fruit that enticed one of the mortal creations by a tempting beast coiled around its branch. The beast promised that a single bite would take them to the same level as God, filling them with knowledge and power they didn't know. The beast took advantage of the nakedness of man, and a single bite would soon lead to the fall of paradise. The events that would follow the downfall of the paradise led to a war in heaven, a rebellion by the angels who questioned God's power, led by none other than the angel who took them under his wings. The mortals watched the sky above them get engulfed in flashing streaks of light and thunder. The war ended, and God's forces stood triumphant around the angel who led the rebellion. They dragged him in front of the Lord and punished him for his sins— banished from the gates of heaven and ripped away from his heavenly grace. God exiled his once beloved creations from his paradise. Eons passed by since the original sin occurred. The society grew from the two progenitors of man and filled the empty spaces on the map. One thing that the mortals gained from the original sins of their progenitors was the forbidden arts of magic, harnessing the elements of the world. God saw this and was surprised that his creations became far superior to those who came before them. Religion grew in this new world, and God remained the most omnipotent being that ruled all the realms. But little did this almighty figure know that there were dangers to his omnipotence and seemingly infinite power. A figure lurked from the ashes of its former self and became something a force greater than it once was. This being would soon bring war and chaos to humanity. God had forgiven the mortals for the sins of their progenitors. He aided them through their growth, but the rise of chaos would soon bring a thought to a harsh realization that would put him into such state of desperation, leading to equally desperate measures to maintain the peace within his realm. God created a light for the mortals from a pure soul— a beacon of his grace on the mortal realm as the symbol of goodness and the righteous to combat the chaos and bring peace to the world. But there are reasons why good things never last. A march to an everlasting degradation had begun. [Greetings! Just a short note, this was my very first story on this platform. 1986

The most damning evidence against the film was promotional materials and even the opening credits of certain copies of Nosferatu that clearly stated that the film was an adaptation of Stoker’s novel. Unable to ignore such evidence, a German court found Nosferatu to be an unlicensed derivative work of Dracula and ordered that every copy of the film be destroyed. While this should have marked the end of the film’s legacy, one copy avoided destruction and resurfaced in the United States, where it was released in 1929. Under the U.S. copyright law of the time, in order for works by a foreign author to enjoy copyright protection in the United States, the author’s country of citizenship must have had a copyright proclamation or agreement with the United States. Stoker was a British citizen, and under the Chace Act, President Harrison had extended copyright to works by British citizens in 1891, thus making Stoker’s work eligible for United States copyright protection. However, United States copyright law also required two copies of the work be deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office. Stoker had never satisfied this deposit requirement, and therefore Dracula was part of the public domain in the United States. Stoker’s estate was thus unable to take any legal action against Nosferatu in the United States, and the film gained a second lease on life, developing into a definitive piece of vampire pop culture. These three tales highlight just a few of the interactions between copyright law and the horror genre. Such tales should serve as reminder to always double check copyright laws to avoid the scare of an unexpected law lurking in the shadows.
