Chapter 1Part 1: The Game

The chandeliers in the ballroom glittered like diamonds, casting a soft glow over the elegantly dressed crowd. Champagne glasses clinked, and laughter filled the air as socialites, politicians, and business magnates mingled. It was one of the most exclusive parties of the year, hosted by none other than the Governor, and everyone who was anyone was there.

Isabella Zhang stood by the marble bar, her sharp eyes scanning the room. With her perfect posture and a deep red gown that clung to her curves in all the right places, she looked every bit the part of the heiress she was. Her dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her lips, painted a matching red, curved into a knowing smile. She sipped her champagne leisurely, but her mind was already at work.

For Isabella, these events were more than just social obligations; they were playgrounds. She wasn't here for networking or to cement her family's already formidable reputation. No, Isabella was here for the thrill of the chase. Her reputation as a heartbreaker was well-earned, and tonight, she was in the mood for a little fun.

But she had one rule: never target anyone above her level.

Her eyes flitted over the crowd. There was Jonathan Lee, the real estate mogul with a notorious love for fast cars and faster women. Too easy. Then there was Eric Wong, a media tycoon who had been trying to get her attention for months. Predictable. She wanted a challenge, someone new.

As she contemplated her options, her friend Lily Chen slid up beside her. "Looking for your next conquest, Isa?" Lily's tone was playful, but there was a note of admiration in her voice.

Isabella smirked. "Isn't that why we're here?"

Lily chuckled, shaking her head. "You're going to run out of eligible men at this rate. What about him?" She nodded subtly towards a tall, handsome man standing near the grand piano, deep in conversation with a group of other men.

Isabella studied him. He was good-looking, impeccably dressed, and carried himself with a quiet confidence. She recognized him as a recently promoted executive from one of the major tech firms. He was definitely a possibility.

"Maybe," she said, taking another sip of her champagne. "But let's see who else is here."

As they continued to scan the room, a subtle shift in the atmosphere caught Isabella's attention. The lively chatter hushed slightly, and heads turned as someone new entered the room. Isabella followed the gaze of the crowd and felt her breath catch in her throat.

General Lu.

He was the kind of man who didn't just walk into a room; he owned it. In his early forties, with a commanding presence and a gaze that could freeze water, General Lu was a force to be reckoned with. He wasn't just powerful—he was untouchable. He had his hand in both the legal and illegal worlds, controlling them with an iron grip. And while he was known for many things, being seen with women wasn't one of them.

Isabella's heart raced. She hadn't expected him to be here. The general was a legend, an enigma, and exactly the kind of man she had always avoided. Her rule was simple, but ironclad: never go after someone above your level, and there was no one above Lu.

"Wow," Lily whispered, her eyes wide. "I didn't think he'd actually show up. You know, he never comes to these things."

"I know," Isabella murmured, forcing herself to look away. She couldn't risk being caught staring. "He's not… I mean, he's not the type."

"Exactly," Lily said, leaning in closer. "You've got to try, Isa. He's the ultimate challenge."

Isabella turned to her friend, giving her a pointed look. "You know the rule."

"Oh, come on," Lily teased. "You're always saying you're the best. What's one little exception?"

But Isabella shook her head, more to convince herself than anyone else. "No. Not him."

Yet as she said the words, she could feel the magnetism of the man pulling at her, drawing her in despite her better judgment. She glanced at him again, and to her shock, found his eyes already on her. The connection was electric, a jolt that shot straight through her.

General Lu's gaze was steady, assessing. For a moment, Isabella felt like prey, and she wasn't used to that. The way he looked at her wasn't like the other men she toyed with; it was as if he was already two steps ahead, as if he had already decided the outcome.

She quickly turned back to her drink, her mind racing. She needed to get out of here before she did something stupid. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she knew she was in trouble. No man had ever affected her like this.

Lily noticed her sudden discomfort. "Isa, are you okay? You're not usually this flustered."

"I'm fine," Isabella said, her voice more clipped than she intended. "I just… I need some air."

Without waiting for a response, she placed her glass on the bar and began to weave her way through the crowd toward the exit. She needed to clear her head, to get away before she made a mistake she couldn't take back.

But as she reached the edge of the room, a hand gently caught her arm. The touch was firm, commanding, and she knew without turning around who it was.

"Leaving so soon?" The voice was deep, smooth, and tinged with amusement.

Isabella slowly turned, finding herself face-to-face with General Lu. Up close, he was even more intimidating, his presence overwhelming. His eyes were dark, almost black, and they bore into her with an intensity that made her knees weaken.

"I… I was just stepping out for some air," she managed to say, cursing herself for sounding so nervous.

He smiled, a small, almost imperceptible curve of his lips. "I was hoping we could talk."

Her mind screamed at her to decline, to walk away, but her body wouldn't obey. She nodded, allowing him to guide her to a more secluded corner of the room.

"I've heard a lot about you, Miss Zhang," he said, his tone conversational but laced with something she couldn't quite place.

"All good things, I hope," she replied, trying to regain her composure.

He didn't respond immediately, instead studying her like one would a complex puzzle. "Depends on who you ask," he finally said, his smile widening slightly.

Isabella forced herself to laugh, though it sounded hollow to her own ears. "Well, I'm sure there are plenty of rumors. Not all of them are true."

"Oh, I'm sure," he said, his gaze not leaving hers. "But I'm more interested in the truth."

Isabella swallowed, suddenly feeling like the roles had been reversed. She wasn't the one in control here, and that realization was as thrilling as it was terrifying.

"I don't usually have much time for small talk," she said, trying to regain the upper hand. "What is it you want, General?"

He stepped closer, his voice lowering to a near whisper. "I think the real question, Miss Zhang, is what you want."

The words sent a shiver down her spine. For the first time in a long time, Isabella didn't have an answer. And she realized with a start that maybe, just maybe, she was no longer the one doing the hunting.

The hunter had become the hunted.
