The hourglass always has two sides for which the sand flows. Time carries on through the grains. This is the tale of a grain in the hourglass who strives to make the world better as he pushes towards the top fighting against the flow. Will he make his way to the top or be buried beneath the sands? ------------ This is my first thing I have written other than small short stories. "What is this?" All around him, at least he thinks he is a him, was nothing but darkness and speaks of light flicking. He reached out to touch one of the lights but a force seems to prevent him from getting too close. "This is strange what is- AAAGH!"
Pain, terrible pain burst though his very being his mind feels like it will shatter. Images began to flash through his mind rapidly. So fast he can barely grasp any of it.
He sees a young boy probably 5 years old. Huddled in a box on the street his clothes tattered. His fingers were bleeding from chewing on them to fight off his hunger. He sees a hand reaching out for him "Come with me child" A warm voice spoke to the boy. He took the hand.
The scene changes. He hears arguing. People saying he shouldn't be here but the warm voice speaks up for him. The scene changes again. The boy seems to have gained some weight. He was dressed in nice clothes. The surroundings around him were full of books. Someone called him a genius but he didn't care for that voice he only enjoyed the feel of a warm palm stroking his head "Mother is very proud of you ____" The name escapes him.
Once more the scene shifts. It is raining. The boy doesn't seem any older but he is surrounded by people in black staring at a coffin being lowered into the ground. The boy has tears barely visible in the rain. He hears people blaming the boy "You are a cursed bastard!" it was one of the voices from before but the boy only walked up and knelt before the coffin crying his eyes out while ignoring everything else
The boy looks older about 15 now he seems to be in a school. He was surrounded by adults who were listening to someones lecture in front of all the other adults. The boys pen writes fast taking notes while at the same time studying a book open next to him.
The boy is older again this time he is receiving a reward. People are clapping and praising him. But the boy doesn't seem to feel happy. The smile on his face is fake. Still the boy tries to keep up appearances. He accepts the praise and shakes hands of others.
The boy, or rather the man as he is an adult now, is surrounded by children passing out gifts. He is laughing as he plays with them but his eyes still held a tinge of loneliness and a strong burning conviction.
Flashing through memories he sees the man working on technology, vaccines, helping children get off the streets. The life seems to blur until the last flash where there was a searing pain and a flash of light before darkness.
The man was floating in space clutching his head, if he had a physical form he probably would be drenched in sweat. "Was that me?" He asked before looking forward again. He sees a light brighter than the others. He reaches out towards the light. Struggling against the darkness that tries to hold him back. His fingers touch the light and once more all goes black.
He hears noise around him. Opening his eyes he sees giants surrounding him. He opens his mouth to speak but all that comes out is a cry. "This one is a mistake." He sees a short woman talking to a man "We have to separate them" He hears another voice asking to see her children and is placed beside the voice. Looking over he sees a beautiful woman and a small baby with red hair
"They are so small" The woman says with a small. He feels a warmth in his heart. He didn't know why but he could see the love in this woman's eyes. The love of a mother to her child. "I will always protect you Gaara and Marix"
[You poor soul. You shouldn't be awake yet. Sleep] another voice appears in his mind and everything goes back to darkness
