Arkien handed a piece of rolled-up parchment to Lexine. Lexine did not unroll it but asked the question that was itching in her mind. "Who is she?"
Arkien paused his action of dipping his feather pen into it's ink bottle, a frown gracing his features for a second. "She is none of your worries Miss Woods. Only a few instructors are aware of your true origin. Since your housemates came up with the smart idea to pass you on as a sylph, you will join the magic classes undergone by the Sylphs. As for your background, Lords Taevlin and Artin will inform you of what they had in mind." He turned to Aurinda, "Inform one of the two Lords that I would like to get a detailed document of their decision on how they plan to explain your housemate's background by the end of the day. I would like to see how wide your imagination is. It must feel good to be young."
Young? How old was he then? He did not look a day over twenty eight.
He continued speaking, "Since Lexine is a Sylph now, she should learn more about Sylphs in order to fit in. As such, she will be in the company of Lord Taevlin, Lady Desire and Lady Quira. Understand?"
Aurinda bowed at the waist, "At once Headmaster."
Lexine frowned when she noticed he had chosen to ignore her question. Maybe she was his sister? They looked nothing alike though. Maybe a girlfriend.
"Miss Woods, your housemates will assist you in making yourself comfortable in the Academy. They are your guides, therefore, unless you need anything of utmost urgency, you do not need to search for me."
Lexine rolled her eyes and muttered to herself under her breath, "Not like I was going to anyway."
"I want to send another letter to my mom if that's okay. I know you said that I can only send a letter once a week, but there's some things I need from home."
Arkien considered it for a few seconds before nodding slowly. If he refused her demand, who knew what trouble she would cause. He handed her a plain piece of paper and a quill.
She cringed at the quill. On noticing her look, he went to give her a brush instead.
She shook her head and picked up the quill. It would be hard to write with a pen she was not used to, but she would make it work.
In the letter, she told her mother of the way the academy was different from the one on earth and of the tournament that was held on the previous day. Not wanting to worry her she left out the part of the second kidnapping. She did not explain what exactly she had been thrown into. The fact that beings of legend were actually a reality would throw her mother to the hospital. With no one there to look after her, Lexine did not want to take the chance. She added things she wanted her mother to ship off to her as well. She lastly sent her regards to her best friend who she missed terribly. When she was satisfied with the letter, she folded another piece of paper into an envelope and signed her name at the top.
Writing using the quill was more difficult than it looked in movies. She used too much ink at times, which blotched some parts of the letter. Either way, her mother would probably understand what she meant in the letter.
Once Lexine was done, she waved the letter between her fingers. "Will I be able to get the things I've mentioned here?"
Arkien frowned. Was he indulging her too much? "Your gadgets shall not work here."
Lexine gestured at the watch on her wrist. The hands had completely stopped moving the day before although it was brand new, "I kind of figured that out. I just need some other things from home."
Arkien considered refusing but Lexine placed the letter on his desk and stood, cutting him off completely. "Aurinda and I have to join the others for lunch, thank you Karl."
When she called him the name he referred himself as on their first day of meeting, his eyes shot up. He didn't think she remembered that day. He sighed and decided to indulge her this once.
"Lady Zavilina, please refrain from using the back entrance since you are a student of this academy."
Aurinda bowed at the waist, "Apologies Headmaster. I shall refrain from making the same mistake again."
He dismissed them with the promise to send someone to pick up the stuff Lexine had requested from her mother. They would arrive at their house by the end of the day or early the next morning. This made Lexine happy. She badly needed deodorant.
They went back to their house for lunch. The rest were lounging in the living area discussing something. Desire had a book that she was writing in as the others spoke.
When they walked in the room, Cardial was speaking, "We should pass her off as having the same element as Desire. That will make it easier to believe."
Desire noted that down while Christana opposed what he just said while rolling her eyes. "Just because you are related does not mean you control the same element you uneducated mutt."
Cardial growled at the insult but held himself together when Aurinda and Lexine walked into the room.
Artin stood and offered his seat to Aurinda. "Did you meet with Headmaster?"
Aurinda nodded and took the seat, smiling at him. Sevin offered his seat to Lexine. She took it gratefully. The distance from Karl's office to their house was long and exhausting to say the least.
"Headmaster would like a detailed document explaining what explanation you have decided to grant Lexine's background. It should be delivered to him by either Lord Taevlin or Lord Verancy before the end of the day. Secondly, she must be in the company of the Sylphs in this house who will assist her to fit in more as a Sylph to go with the background we chose."
Christana cracked up laughing at the last part. "I almost do not want her to learn any Sylph history. Did you see the look on everyone's face when she stood and left before Taevlin did?"
Sevin laughed along with her. "It was almost as if she had committed a high tier crime. What was even worse was when Taevlin did not do anything about the blatant show of disrespect."
Lexine was confused. "What did I do?"
Adley who was seated close to her heard her mutter and answered her question, "In Sylph culture, it is considered rude to leave the room before someone of a higher rank does unless they give you permission. It is punishable by whipping if I'm not wrong." She looked to Desire and Quira for confirmation.
They nodded.
Lexine racked her mind to remember if any other Sylph had stood before she did. Come to think of it, she was the first 'sylph' to stand. She was originally going to wait for Desire to stand so that they could leave together, but she had gotten so angry that she had left the room to prevent herself from signing a death wish.
"Whipping?" Lexine asked incredulously. Her eyes were wide in shock and a frown fell onto her lips "Not even my mother lays a hand on me."
"No one is going to whip you. We are here to protect you," Aurinda said comfortingly, "am I right?" she turned to the rest.
All but Taevlin gave their consent. Lexine moved farther from him. Although she hated his voice in her head, even a nod would be just fine.
If Taevlin did nothing however, his reputation would be at stake. He was the highest ranking Sylph in the Academy. If someone disrespected him in the slightest, they would be punished without a second doubt. However, this was a human. Who knew how weak their bodies were. He could do something small resulting in her breaking. He had also promised Headmaster to keep an eye on her. How troublesome.
Either way, he nodded. After she was aware of their rules but still disregarded them, he would ensure she was punished accordingly, human or not.
Lexine internally sighed in relief when he nodded. If she noticed even the slightest of danger from her roommates, she would take the first pen out of the Academy.
