Big Mistakes (Pt. 2)

"Did I do something wrong?" He asked, standing as she turned and was now face to face with the person she secretly hoped to avoid.

"No, I just-" She trailed off, her thoughts consuming her as she tried to think of a way out. "I just need to go meet with Minji." She sighed, scanning his face for a glimpse of understanding.

"Are you sure you're not mad at me?" He asked; she watched him furrow his brow towards her movements. He had shifted his body to continue blocking her from leaving immediately.

"No, I just need to talk with her." Jennie forced her fake smile at him, and Kai could see right through it. He had already noticed the difference in her smiles and actions. He could tell something was off with how she continued to distance herself. Kai had spent the week wondering about their relationship, hoping there was still one to keep. He scanned her eyes and looked exhausted before giving up.

"Okay." Kai moved to the side, watching her leave without saying another word.

Kai let her walk from the door while Jennie tried to think about her mission. She needed to talk with Minji, but there was so much she wasn't sure of. She was worried about a dream and thought of herself as foolish. She worried about something that would never happen but knew there was more. She'd never had a weird dream like this, and what made it even weirder was how real it felt. She could still feel the ground she woke up on and the trees and branches she stepped on. She could still hear some of the whispers; the other words were clear. She had heard them, and there was no ignoring that. She could still feel the goosebumps on her skin as she locked eyes with the other person. There was something more to it.

Jennie spent most of the day dwelling on the dream, lacking a presence in class and with Minji. Minji watched carefully as Jennie's lips continued to move, noticing the conversation she was having with herself. Minji sat silently next to her friend while they ate lunch and during class, carrying on the conversation while Jennie stayed distracted. Jennie spoke of them talking about it later, but Minji's curiosity had peaked. She was eager to know what was preoccupying her time and what was so important. Jennie carried on about her day, noticeably struggling with her thoughts. As classes ended, Jennie rushed home first.

The more Jennie thought about the dream, the more she realized it wasn't the dream but maybe a message that she was missing. Jennie tried to walk herself through the dream again, trying to listen and think about what she might have missed. As she tried to think back, she heard a knock on the door. Jennie got up quickly, running to see a smiling Minji waiting patiently. Even though she invited Minji to study, Jennie longed for a moment to herself just for a day. Jennie was grateful as her bubbly friend walked inside and continued to talk about the paper she would need to begin. She was grateful for the company, and the positivity Minji brought her but missed the comforting silence she had grown used to.

"Hey, Tae asked if he could bring food. I told him it was okay." She looked to Jennie for confirmation as she shot a reassuring smile.

Thank you." She sighed, walking to the middle of the living room. "Should we start?" Minji nodded excitedly.

As the girls studied for a bit, they would be momentarily interrupted by a knock on the door. Tae was there holding food for both of them. Minji answered the door with a smile. From what Jennie could see, he looked better. She and his mom had been able to talk with him and hoped it helped. After dropping off the food, he left to allow them to continue to eat and return to studying.

The light of the day faded, and the girls found themselves growing more and more tired. Jennie had already felt restless from last night but was ready to sleep. She knew it would be harder to sleep alone, so when Minji offered, she had to accept. There was something about sleeping here alone that made her feel uncomfortable. Thanks to her parent's insurance money, she could afford the place, but it creeped her out too much now. She had slowly found herself wanting to stay away. She quickly gathered a bag, telling herself that maybe the dream would not repeat if she was not home.

With a huge smile on her face and a big yawn that followed, Minji continued to remind her how nice it was to have a roommate. She had actually asked Jennie before to move in, but the thought was unreal. She didn't want to invade Minji's space, especially since her place wasn't much bigger. Although, it was more furnished. As Minji continued convincing Jennie to move in, the sound of a stick breaking startled her as they walked. Jennie jumped at the sound, turning quickly to scan her surroundings.

"Is everything okay?" She asked Jennie, turning to see the concerned look she held.

"Yeah, sorry. I just got creeped out." he looked back again, thinking about the snapping sound she chose not to follow.

"Here, let's run." Minji smiled, taking her hand and beginning to jog.

As the girls laughed and clung together while they ran, Jennie felt a sense of relief as the wind blew against them. Something about the changing weather was comforting her, and the breeze cooled off her suspicions. The girls continued to laugh and joke as they ran together, rounding the final corner. Jennie paused as they stopped on the road that led straight to Minji's house. There was something about the scene she was staring at, and it just didn't make sense. Minji noticed this pause, her eyes following Jennie's gaze until she was sure they were looking at the same thing.

"Is that Kai?" Minji asked curiously, whispering to Jennie.

Jennie was still trying to process what she was looking at. With Minji by her side, both girls watched as Kai and the girl beside him talked. She leaned against the wall, her laugh sounding forced. He spoke in a low tone, and both girls could not hear anything he said. Jennie watched as Kai stood there, his eyes on the girl who was flirting and trying to pull him closer. She could feel her body heating up at the thought. Maybe this was what her dream told her: don't be fooled by him or his words. She felt a cold hand clutch her hand, turning to see Minji shaking her head.
