18: attempt

~~Levi~~

I wanted to keep searching for her, yet they told me they knew where she was.

I wanted to go save her from this fate that now held her captive, yet they told me that if we did that she would be in more danger than she already was.

What a goddamned joke.

I watched how cold that this all had made Mauraline. She refused anyone but me and Week to handle her, yet she wouldn't speak a word. I definitely tried, to no avail. She would stare off into space when anyone tried, but she would acknowledge Week and I, and she wouldn't attack us when we went to pick her up or hold her close.

Angel would visit me every few days for an update on her niece, today was no different. When she had asked, I never carried great news with me. Every day, the small girl was getting worse and worse, falling into depression that none of us could save her from.

Angel couldn't stay long. She had to get back to her training and shadowing of Lucifer so she could take over when he decided to retire. She had promised to me it wouldn't be much longer, that soon she would be free to spend time with our niece and help her mentality.

She's said that every day for the past year. The entirety of the time since we were told that our sister was actually the new head archangel, and that Zayn never died, instead he was holding her as his prisoner.

"Levi, a little help please," Week called from Maura's room again. I sighed as I walked towards the room. It was a mess, and Maura was in the center of it. Now eleven, her hair had grown to a shade of a light brown, with natural highlights any girl would die for. She had learned to move between her angel and demon parts, her demon side was stronger than any other we had encountered, and now she was in control. Her eyes were the shining blue that said that her demon was in control of her, normally they were the shining gold of Zayn or the mismatched eyes.

"Levi, thank god!" Week called to me. Mauraline turned her head towards me and a growl came out. "It's happening again, her off-balance!"

Maura crouched down, staring at me intently, waiting for me to pounce. I dropped down too, tilting my head to the side. Her eyes searched mine for something before she slowly made her way towards me, her body still low to the ground.

She met me in the middle and sniffed me, searching for whatever danger her demon side had created in order to be set free from the mental cage that Maura had built for herself.

She whimpered then, just like how she always did when the demon realized I was here and I was just like her, more angel than demon.

She began to curl up by my feet, so I sat on the ground and crossed my legs so she could curl up and get a bit more comfort. We had finally decided on what her demon name was going to be, with much debate from Xaphan and Angel against me, but we had settled on the name Meziana.

It was the name of an ancient succubus who was killed in the last war after taking a magic shot in Lucifer's place.

I heard the small girl cry before I smelled the salty tears that began to drip down her cheeks. I picked her up into my arms and held her close as her sobs began to hit her body with a force I wasn't prepared for.

Then, the castle began to shake and the alarm bells began to sound. I heard the soldiers running outside the room and took Mauraline with me as I stood.

The angels were attacking the castle.

~~Rose~~

They say that life is full of wonders, surprises, and mysteries. I think they lied.

All I wanted was to hold my daughter, to tell her nothing would ever hurt her. To tell her that her mother was here for good this time.

But that could never happen as long as I was trapped in this wretched realm with Zayn controlling my every move with that stupid ring.

Within the privacy of my room, I slipped off my short lace glove and pulled up the sleeve on my dress to assess the damage.

The ring had black veiny lines coming from it, under my skin I could feel the magic clawing through my veins. It traveled up my arm and stopped in the middle of my bicep. I watched as it pulsed and spread a little bit further than the last time and hissed at the pain.

I tugged at it again and felt the scorching pain as the black began to recede. Once I felt too tired to continue, I gave up the battle and almost screamed as it quickly shot up my arm and went to my shoulder this time. The pain slowly faded as I stopped fighting the spread.

It was in place as a vow and a forced bonding of two angels. It was his vow to break me down.

And once the black went through my whole body, it was over and he had won.

"There you are, my darling!" he called into my room before coming up behind me and tracing the black veins. "It's coming along nicely, isn't it?"

I felt a pulse through the bonding and I let it lean me back to him. He wrapped his arm around me, then I leaned forward and sunk my teeth into his arm.

He yelped and threw me across the room. I hit the wall and lost my breath as I slid to the ground.

"Dirty, evil girl," he said, walking over and pulling me up by my hair. I whimpered as he dropped me back down.

"Looks like you're still not ready to face people. Guess that's another day locked away," he said, walking to the door and started to shut it.

"No! Please!" I called, racing towards the door, tumbling over my own two feet. I was too late when I got there, hearing the lock click from the outside. "No," I sobbed out and slid myself down the door.

"I'll be back in a few hours, my darling. Try to behave until then," after his words flowed to me, his steps faded down the hall and again I was left alone in this dreary room I had once loved.

And there goes another day without a proper meal.

They all definitely lied.

~~Angel~~

Have you ever had your heart long for someone who you knew was too far away to touch? Or someone you thought was your greatest confident and you loved them so dearly and yet they turned their backs towards you and you didn't want to accept defeat? And you fight for that person, and yet you can't seem to stop?

Not, at least, until the truth stared at you blank in the face with a sneer.

That was how I felt during my transfer of power when the angels attacked.

With Rose leading them.

Her eyes that I once loved so dearly were a blank silver. Her face had black veins covering half of it, and she had a single white glove on her left hand. She looked skinny, her cheeks hallow with what seemed to be malnourishment. Her dress hung off her like a cover, her body so much smaller than I remembered it to be.

Lucifer and Mother both held me back from meeting my sister head on in battle. Week and Maura stood next to me. Week stared blankly at his former soulmate while Maura's eyes were glazed over. Week held her to his chest as Levi ran out to join the rest.

I watched before I heard the explosion. My new crown laid on my head, the black jewel that hung over my eyes holding my newly released power until my body could contain it.

I put my hands over my mouth in horror as both Lucifer and Mother fell from the sky and listened to the beauty of the silence as they fell.

I felt a ripping of my clothes and I felt bones reform as wings protruded from my back. I knew without looking what they had looked like. The almost bleached white leather that they were.

I let the scream out as I broke the window and flew towards my sister, my sword held high.
