His second chance at life quickly turned into a nightmare when the Grand Duke’s household was executed, and Elian was sold into servitude as a courtesan. In this cruel new existence, Elian crossed paths with Izan, the enigmatic crown prince who harbored dark secrets of his own. As they grew closer, a forbidden love began to blossom, one that could upend the delicate balance of power in the empire and destroy them both. Torn between survival, betrayal and desire, Elian and Izan faced impossible choices. Chapter 1The Last Day on the Streets

Elian tightened his grip on Buddy's makeshift leash, his heart pounding in sync with the frantic rhythm of his footsteps.

The city around him was a maze of shadowed alleys and bustling streets, all of which he had memorized in the years he had spent living on them.

His world was a blur of movement, a kaleidoscope of flickering streetlights and the distant hum of traffic. Every instinct screamed at him to run faster, to escape the danger that loomed behind him.

Behind him, the thugs were closing in, their laughter cutting through the night like the sharp edge of a knife.

They had spotted him the moment he snatched the burger from a distracted vendor's cart, their bored expressions turning into predatory grins as they gave chase. To them, it was a game, a chance to flex their muscles, to feel powerful. But to Elian, it was life or death.

His breath came in ragged gasps, each one searing his lungs with cold air. He hadn't eaten in days, and the adrenaline pumping through his veins was the only thing keeping him moving.

Buddy, his loyal companion, stayed close to his side, his small body darting with agility that belied his size. The dog's presence was a comfort, a reminder that Elian wasn't entirely alone in this world.

Elian's thoughts raced as fast as his feet. He knew these streets better than anyone, knew which corners to cut and which alleys to avoid.

But the thugs were relentless, their heavy footsteps echoing off the walls, closing in on him with every heartbeat.

Elian risked a glance over his shoulder, his eyes widening in fear as he saw them gaining ground. They were bigger, stronger, and well-fed, while he was just a scrawny street rat fighting for survival.

Buddy whimpered, sensing his fear, and Elian's heart ached at the sound.

The dog had been his only friend in this cruel, unforgiving world, the only one who had stayed by his side through thick and thin.

Elian had found Buddy as a pup, abandoned in a trash-strewn alley, and they had been inseparable ever since.

Buddy had saved him from the crushing loneliness of street life, offering warmth on cold nights and companionship when the world turned its back on him.

"Just a little further, Buddy," Elian whispered, his voice hoarse with exhaustion. "We can lose them."

He veered into a narrow alley, the shadows swallowing him whole. The walls were slick with grime, and the air was thick with the stench of decay.

But Elian didn't care. He knew that if he could just make it to the other side, there was a chance he could lose them in the labyrinthine backstreets. His feet pounded against the wet pavement, the sound drowned out by the blood rushing in his ears.

But fate, it seemed, had other plans.

As Elian emerged from the alley, his hope flickered for a brief moment. The street ahead was empty, bathed in the dim glow of a flickering streetlight.

He thought he might actually make it. But that hope was quickly dashed when he heard the roar of an engine, the flash of headlights blinding him as a car barreled down the street.

Time seemed to slow as Elian turned his head, his wide eyes reflecting the oncoming vehicle. The thugs' laughter rang in his ears, growing louder, more menacing. They were close, too close, and he had nowhere to go. Panic surged through him, his muscles freezing as the car's horn blared, the sound deafening in the stillness of the night.

"Buddy!" Elian cried out, his voice cracking with terror.

He tried to jump out of the way, tried to pull Buddy with him, but it was too late. The world exploded into pain and noise as the car struck him, the impact sending him flying through the air. He barely registered the sound of Buddy's frightened yelp before everything went black.

***

Elian didn't know how long he floated in that abyss, suspended between life and death. The pain was distant now, replaced by a numbness that seeped into his bones. His mind wandered, flitting through memories like a moth drawn to a flame.

He thought of Buddy, of the way the dog had curled up against him on those bitterly cold nights, offering what little warmth his small body could provide. He thought of the burger he had risked everything to steal, of the taste of meat that had barely touched his tongue before it was all ripped away.

Most of all, he thought of the life he had lived, if it could even be called that. A life of scrounging for scraps, of dodging fists and curses, of nights spent shivering in the dark with only Buddy for company. It hadn't been much of a life, but it was the only one he had known.

Elian felt himself slipping away, the darkness pulling him deeper. There was a sense of finality in it, a realization that this was the end. He had always known it would come to this, that one day the streets would claim him just as they had claimed so many others before him. There was no escaping it.

And yet, even in that final moment, his thoughts were of Buddy. He hoped, wherever he was going, that his loyal friend would be there too. That they would be together, just as they had been in life. It was a small comfort, but it was all he had.

The darkness closed in, and Elian let it take him.

But then, just as he felt himself slipping away entirely, something changed. A sudden, sharp breath filled his lungs, and his eyes flew open as if he had been drowning and had just broken the surface. The world came rushing back, not the cold, harsh streets of the city, but something different. Something… impossible.

He was lying on the soft grass, the scent of earth and water filling his senses. The sound of rushing water reached his ears, and when he finally managed to sit up, gasping for breath, he saw that he was by a riverbank. The gentle flow of the river was in stark contrast to the chaotic city streets he had just left behind.

Elian's heart raced, his mind struggling to comprehend what had just happened. The last thing he remembered was the car, the impact, the pain. But now… now he was here, alive and whole, in a place that was utterly foreign to him.

His hand instinctively reached for Buddy, but found nothing but empty air. Panic gripped him as he looked around, searching for his friend. "Buddy?" he called out, his voice trembling. "Buddy, where are you?"
