DanMachi: A Glitch In The System

"I'm sorry... I only wanted to help!"

'The road to hell is paved with good intentions.'

I chuckled as I thought about it.

'It isn't wrong.'

"Stop crying." Even I was surprised at how cold I sounded, even as I laid dying.

"Run. They're coming for you. It's over for me, but not for you."

"B-but..."

"Just go. Won't you let me die in peace?"

She bit her lips, tears streaming out of her eyes.

"Be careful."

Those were my last words to her.

She reluctantly got up and left, looking at me one last time before charging out of the room.

"The mission was a bust...", I lamented. If this succeeded, it would've been the turning point of the war. The third World War.

An intense headache struck me, followed by the loss of energy.

Blood loss is really working hard to kill me.

I was dying, I was sure of it. After all, no man can survive a bullet to the heart without immediate treatment.

I'm barely holding on.

I'm scared of death.

My vision was slowly fading, and I drew in my last breath.

On Wednesday, November 11, 2021, the secret service agent, Frederick Kabi, died.

I woke up to the sounds of birds chirping.

The sun shined brightly through the window of the room that I'm in.

"Where am I...?", I muttered groggily, having trouble adjusting to the sudden sunlight.

I then snapped awake as the memories of last night broke into my head, like an uncontrollable river.

"I... died?"

I, Frederick Kabi, died on a mission.

Yet, I'm still alive?

"Damn, am I the protagonist of an isekai anime?"

I chuckled, then stood up and looked around the room.

On the nightstand next to the bed, there were two letters, from two different senders as well, if the names indicated anything.

I read the one on top first, and that's when I realized something.

There was no sender for this letter.

I opened it and there was only 1 sentence on this otherwise empty piece of paper.

'You are in Orario, and is an adventurer part of the Soma Familia. Good luck.'

"Soma Familia..." I rolled the unfamiliar word on my tongue.

As I was about to read the second letter, something happened outside the window that I caught a glance of.

Something that truly shocked me to my core.

I witnessed magic.

Before my eyes, I saw a little girl transforming into a man, who then proceeded to decimate a section of a building with a fireball, creating a loud *BOOOM* noise.

"What the f*ck?"

I was flustered for a moment, but I regained my calm quick enough due to my professional experience.

The same could not be said for the people on the street, running like headless chickens.

'This truly is like the an anime...'

I picked up the second letter and this time, there was a sender.

'Hostess of Fertility'

'Dear Mr. Incewill, your debt at the tavern has been increased to 8,680 valis as of yesterday. If you do not pay it off within a month, we will be forced to take action.'

'Tavern? This guy is an alcoholic... how the hell do you get a debt that high, anyways?'

I lampooned inwardly. Not even a day has passed and I'm already discouraged.

"Haaa... I got out of the fire and straight into a train wreck... You know what? I can't be ungrateful. Not everybody (from what I know), get a second chance of life. Frederick, you can do this."

I tried my best to encourage myself to get off my ass and find a way to make money.

According to the first letter, I was an adventurer belonging to the Soma Familia.

First things first, gather information.

How do I do that?

The first thing that came to mind was heading for the tower. The tower that stuck out like a sore thumb among all the buildings.

When I headed into the tower, now I know called as the Tower of Babel, I almost immediately received dirty looks, especially from other adventurers.

'What did you do, Incewill?'

I tried my best to ignore the looks and headed to a receptionist, who was reluctant to deal with me.

"Hello, Mr. Incewill... how may I help you today?"

"I'm going into the dungeon."

"I see... would you like a supporter?"

"Supporter?"

"The people who carry magic stones."

"No. I'll be fine on my own."

"Then, have a good day."

With that, the conversation was ended. She clearly did not like conversing with me.

I left the guild as fast as I could in order to avoid the glares, which were turning annoying.

Then, I headed into the first level of the dungeon.

When I walked into the dungeon, it was filled with adventurers walking up a stair into the first level of the dungeon.

Naturally, I did so as well.

When I entered the first level, goblins and kobolds charged at me.

I grabbed the only weapon that I had on me, a shortsword that was chipped along the edges.

Although the weapon was not of high quality, the monsters weren't either, so it did not make a huge difference.

They yelled a battlecry as they charged towards me, but that did little to nothing as it was... surprisingly cute?

I ignored it and waited until they were close enough to me to kill them all in 1 hit.

That's when I heard it.

The *Ding*.

*Ding!*

A noise emitted in my head.

I was weirded out before I said something that I should've said much earlier, "System...?"

That was when a blue screen popped up in front of my eyes.

'Damn, my stats actually look impressive?'

I wonder how I compare to others of this world.

Regardless of my standing in the world, the thing that caught my eye the most was [Pathway],[Sequence] and [Progress].

After all, these were things from a novel that I read.

Lord of the Mysteries.

From what I can infer, I am the Sequence 9 of the Error Pathway, and with every monsters I kill, I fill up my progress bar, and when that is done, I rank up to the next sequence.

Just a well educated guess.
