Chapter 67

The place—especially the kitchen—was in a mess. Seemed the Wilson men had browbeat Gary’s girlfriend into cooking for them. She’d walked out on both Gary and the kitchen after a couple of days.

“She couldn’t cook worth a damn anyway,” Dennis explained, giving his mom a welcoming hug.

In an effort to placate Jimmy, Barry told Bess that he was always at the end of the phone if she needed him for anything. He glanced briefly at the sink full of dirty dishes, the countertops covered in empty takeout containers, and the overflowing trashcan.

“Jimmy, can you take out the trash while I get started on the dishes?”

“It’s okay, I’ll do them in a minute,” Bess said.

“Okay,” Barry said, helping Bess to a chair. “I’ll just give them a quick rinse.”

He then washed and dried them, and while Bess watched, had Dennis put them away.

Now Jimmy pulled up in the yard of the Double J, shut off the engine, but made no move to get out of the truck.
