"Kai!" Ava screamed at him, eyes wide and frantic after he took the first step.
She hadn't seen anything because of her vision being locked on the corpse that had chased her, and he had also been too focused to notice.
The two of them had forgotten about the other one until Kai was suddenly tackled from behind, falling to the ground with a strong hand forcing his head downwards and pressing his face into the grass.
"That took you long enough," The mouthless corpse growled, standing with a grunt and staring above Kai at the woman who was holding him down and bleeding from a hole in her chest where her heart was.
"I had to wait until this woman died before I did anything to her body, you know just as I do that possessing a living human comes with the risk of being trapped inside of them, even if they die afterwards," The woman answered, chuckling.
"She sure took her sweet time though, without my body I had to wait!"
"Why not possess the other one then?"
"His head was barely attached, like the first human, I did not want this little shit kicking my head off like a ball a second time." She scoffed, pressing Kai's face harder into the ground when he began struggling against her weight on his back and shoulders.
"How about it, we got the bastard now, so how do you want to kill him, it'd be a shame to just do it as is, right?"
"Ava, why are you still here?" Kai asked, groaning in pain whilst her heavy breath filled his ears. "I told you to keep running, why did you stop?" He forced his head off the ground, staring at her with one of his eyes red from having the grass rubbed inside of it.
"I'm the one they were after, so run; run fast, don't look back... oi..." Kai closed his irritated eye and widened the other one when she fearlessly walked between the two possessed corpses and knelt before him, smiling and caressing his cheek.
"Sorry, but if I ran away now, I wouldn't be much of a girlfriend, would I?" She shook her head.
"You idiot, now is not the time for jokes, I already told you, you're nothing to me, they WILL kill you, Ava!" Kai continued to struggle against the weight on his back and head.
"Silence," The Woman pressed his head roughly onto the ground again and chuckled at Ava. "I have not seen this type of human before, do you even understand what you are saying, girlfriend? Are you fine giving your soul for the sake of another?" She smirked, revealing a mouth of dirt and blood from the woman bleeding out and dying from the wound in her chest.
"Over the last week since he saved me, I have been the happiest ever in my life, for once, someone saw me, someone wasn't afraid to tell me the truth," Ava stared at Kai, still afraid to look at the corpses, but ubwilling to move an inch.
"He gave me hope that there are still good people in this life, and now you want me to go back to being invisible and suffering a miserable existence in a world that is better off destroyed anyway... if that's what you're telling me to do then I would rather die here with him and disappear forever!" She sat on the ground and held his head again.
"There is no world without my hero in it, I refuse to live without you." Ava smiled at his shock, and for a moment, Kai felt a strange heat entering his body.
The mouthless corpse looked at the other, making circles at the side of his head with his fingers while the other continued laughing at her.
"This bitch is crazy," The female corpse released a long huff and slammed Kai's head in the ground splitting his forehead from the blow. "You followed him around for only a week and now you think you can't live without him, Idiot?" She asked, but Ava remained still, bent in her resolve.
"Kai, it's okay if I die with you, right?" She ignored the creature and kept her gaze locked to the one before her even as the other rested his hand on her head and held out his other hand in a chopping motion. "Right?"
"Ava..."
Her's and Kai's eyes locked, and he swallowed when she saw the pain on his face. "Don't take too long okay? Hell won't be any fun if we end up separated from each other." She closed her eyes while Kai began screaming out.
"Listen to me... Listen!" He began thrashing when the man behind her folded his fist in her hair and raised her off the ground. "Ava, don't do this, fight damnit, fight until there's no strength left in your body! Do something, don't give up like this!"
"HAAAAAA!!!" A voice, obscured in the forestry behind them drew everyone's attention.
"Who-"
Ava's eyes shot open when a brick came sailing across the treeline above her head and slamming into the nose of the man holding her causing him to stagger from his face scrunching and his vision going shot.
their bodies were already dead; yes, there was no pain, but the force he was hit with made him stagger bckwards and release her.
In this same moment the woman pinning Kai to the ground turned her head resulting in an elbow slamming in her jaw as the teen beneath her spun and attacked at the first chance he got.
"Damnit, who was that?" The mouthless corpse sprung to his feet, but as soon as he was standing again he was on his way to the ground, this time with his head caved in when Kai attacked him first, grabbing the brick that had just hit him and smashing it into his face a second time.
"Kai!" Ava rolled out of the way when the corpse with the caved in head arose and punched him sending him clean off his feet into a cascade across the grass and hitting the fence above the highway.
He was on his feet again as though he had not just taken a blow akin to the ram of a charging bull, it showed however after he took the first defensive stance and staggered to the side, reaching out for the fence but grabbing her arm instead after she had rushed to him.
"What the hell is with you?" Kai asked, now facing the two corpses with her slightly holding him. "Die with me? Do you think this is some kind of movie?" He rocked his jaw and spat out a clump of blood along with a molar. "Fuck," He cursed rolling his lower jaw and wincing from the pain rattling his nerves, how he had survived and remained conscious wasonly due to the adrenaling rushing through his veins.
"You fucking assholes!" The voice from earlier came from the bushes again followed by a rock smashing into the side of the woman's head.
Again, this was all Kai needed, using the moment her and the other looked away to his advantage and rushing at them, he weaved around the surprised punch thrown at him by the man, raising his fist in his chin and grabbing his head while he was still staggering, in one swift motion, Kai snapped his neck and broke his leg, while to his surprise, Ava tackled the woman to the ground and started wailing on her.
"You filthy fleshling wench!" The woman beneath her raised her chin in Ava's chest flipping her with a scream and grabbing her leg as soon as she hit the ground twisting her ankle intent on snapping it.
Lost in rage and indifference towards the possessed corpse, Kai used the same brick that had been used twice already and attacked the woman, smashing the side of her head in with so much force that her skull caved and she fell still, just as the other had from having his nervous system severed.
"Stay dead this time!" Kai dragged her by her hair and tossed her with all of his strength into the fence undoing the metal binds and causing that section of it to fall over and the corpse to slide off onto the busy freeway beneath them.
"Kai Mora!" The person that had saved their skins emerged from the bushes, panting and wiping his forehead as he stared at the corpse leaned against the tree, it was the student that had recognised him from his chase through the marketplace.
He had a knife in his grasp, but he held it passively while staring at the corpse, and when he was sure that it was dead this time he put it away and pointed to the bushes.
"We should get out of here."
