Chapter 5: Gathering Allies

Days passed as Li Wei kept up a careful routine, attending council meetings, listening politely to his advisors, and asking simple but revealing questions. Every day, he noted who resisted him and who stayed neutral, slowly mapping out the court's power dynamics.

But today, Li Wei left the palace again to seek wisdom outside his advisors' influence. Disguised in plain robes, he moved quietly through the marketplace, blending into the crowd. The palace guards rarely paid attention to his solitary outings, thinking them strange but harmless.

This time, however, he wasn't just wandering. He'd heard of a former official named Old Zhang, once a skilled military strategist. Rumor had it he'd been exiled after a dispute with the previous emperor. Li Wei wanted to hear what Zhang had to say about the kingdom.

After a long walk through narrow streets, Li Wei arrived at Old Zhang's modest home. He knocked, and soon, a man with graying hair and tired eyes opened the door. When he saw who it was, his expression turned to surprise. "Your Majesty?" he said, awestruck.

"Please, just call me Li Wei," he replied. "I've heard of your reputation and wanted to hear your thoughts on our kingdom."

Old Zhang invited Li Wei inside, and they sat on worn cushions as he spoke bluntly about the kingdom's struggles, the people's suffering, the corruption in court, and the rulers' indifference.

After hours of talking, Li Wei asked, "Then why didn't you stay to help the people when they needed you?"

Old Zhang sighed. "I had no choice. The advisors made sure of that. Those who challenge the Chancellor don't last long." He warned Li Wei to be careful, as the court was full of people who would rather see him fail.

Li Wei nodded, taking in his words. "Then help me," he said. "I can't do this alone. I need allies who care about the people and want real change."

Seeing the sincerity in Li Wei's eyes, Old Zhang agreed. "Very well. I'll teach you what I know. But be wise, don't rush. A hasty ruler doesn't last."

Grateful, Li Wei had gained his first ally, someone who could guide him through the dangers of court politics. With Old Zhang's help, he would learn how to navigate his enemies and bring about change.
