Joanna had just finished in the restroom and was about to leave when a familiar face entered. It was Melanie.
"You must be Mrs. King," Melanie said with a smile, though her eyes betrayed a hint of disdain. Joanna never cared for women like her and couldn't recall ever having a confrontation with one.
Her issues were always with men or her half-sister, as far back as she could remember.
"Well, you've stated the obvious, so I'll excuse you to join the banquet," Joanna replied, trying to bypass Melanie. But Melanie couldn't resist making a sarcastic comment.
"I thought there would be a more deserving woman to carry on the legacy of the Kings, not a lowlife climbing on their coattails."
Joanna stopped in her tracks, stung by Melanie's callous words. They were not the words of a dignified woman, and even though Joanna had resolved not to let anyone's words affect her, these ones did.
