Chapter 144 : Haunted House

Seeing the haunted house in front of him, Yuta couldn't help but sigh; he should have at least brought a light.

Then he suddenly realized that he did have a survival kit in his system space. There should be something useful in there, right?

So he took out a giant kit from his system space and started to search for anything he could use. Yes, there was a light—a headlight.

He kept the kit just in case he ever needed it. Who knows when he might go into survival mode, right? But this was more about him being overly prepared just in case. His childhood experiences always reminded him to stay one step ahead in all situations.

As the dark place was finally illuminated, he was now a little more willing to explore the haunted house.

He first decided to check out the living room. It was the biggest room in the house and the closest to him.

*Crack.

The door made an eerie sound, causing him to purse his lips. If it weren't for the mission, he really wouldn't want to be here.

The hall was the only place that was well-lit, thanks to the glass door leading to the garden from the living room. This room was the only part of the haunted house that looked normal.

He glanced around and, finding nothing of interest, moved on.

He explored the kitchen and the washroom on the ground floor, leaving no area unchecked. After finding nothing, he finally set his sights on the first floor. It was only a two-story building, so that was the only place left.

If he couldn't find anything there, he had no idea why the system wanted him to come here. Sighing, he moved on.

*Crack.

The moment he stepped on the stairs, the sound stopped him. He now wondered whether it was even safe to use the stairs.

With light steps, he climbed up and found only two rooms. One was a storeroom in which he found practically nothing. The room was completely empty, devoid of any items.

Sighing again, he was ready to explore the last room.

He slowly turned the knob of the door and opened it, only to find himself entering a very well-decorated room.

To Yuta's surprise, this room wasn't dusty like the others. It was clear that whoever lived there previously had taken great care of it. From the teddy bears and girly decorations, it was evident that the previous occupant had to be a girl.

Unlike the other rooms, which were mostly empty with minimal furniture, this place was completely filled with items.

Sighing again, Yuta continued searching the room.

From stuffed toys to clothes, he examined everything but couldn't find anything useful.

As he was about to finish searching the wardrobe, he noticed a small box at the bottom inside the wardrobe.

Seeing that the box was the only thing he hadn't checked, he extended his hand to reach it. But just then, he heard a sound behind him.

Now, Yuta is usually not afraid of anything, but when it comes to things he can't understand, mainly paranormal activities, he can't help but be cautious.

Instinctively, he looked back, trying to find the source of the sound, but saw no one. Seeing that it was nothing, he was about to return to the intriguing box when he saw something strange.

'The door. I never closed the door when I entered here,' he pondered, noticing the door was not completely closed but almost ajar—just enough for someone to peek inside.

As he was pondering this, his eyes widened when he saw a movement outside the room. Through the small opening in the door, he saw someone there.

His eyes immediately turned into Sharingan as he became alert. But despite how serious he was, his spider-sense wasn't reacting.

After some thought, he got ready to confront whoever was there. But just as he was about to open the door, he saw small hands slowly grabbing the edge of the door, followed by a small head peeking at him.

Blink... Blink.

'That is definitely a girl,' he thought.

He couldn't help but say it out loud and quickly looked around. The house was completely isolated and abandoned, but this particular room was well cared for, clean to the point that anyone might mistake it for someone living there right now.

'Did someone leave this girl here alone?' Yuta's mind raced. He had forgotten about the mission for the time being; all he could think about was who would do such a thing.

He slowly sat down, seeing the small girl still peeking at him from behind the door. He couldn't see her entirely as the door was barely open, but he could tell she was a girl from her long black hair and beautiful eyes.

That, plus the girly decor, made it clear that this was a girl's room.

"Hello, I'm Yuta, a hero for fu... How are you?" Yuta crouched down, staying away from the door, and spoke with a smile, making sure he seemed approachable.

Seeing the girl still wary of him, he wanted to ensure he acted like the hero he was and helped her.

The little head peeking from behind the door straightened, and her eyes blinked.

She slowly opened the door further, and her cute face finally came into view.

"Yuta!"
