Expect the Worst

"I can't confine you to this situation and watch you struggle when I know there might still be a way for you to be free and happy. I'm scared you'll leave me, yes, I am, but I'm even more terrified of seeing you suffer while waiting for my return... for my memories to resurface. I've seen that before."

I didn't know how to react. My gaze dropped to my trembling hands on my lap, tears streaming down uncontrollably.

"C-Celeste…" Arik's broken voice called out to me.

I quickly looked at him. My heart sank further as I saw the immense pain and sorrow in his eyes. I felt like the sky and earth had collapsed on me.

"A-Arik, please… Don't…" I stuttered. My own words choked me.

He looked so helpless, and I felt utterly powerless. Especially when he sadly smiled at me.

"I'm sorry, baby, but please, if I ever forget you... don't wait for me to remember you again. Don't confine yourself and your heart to me."

I shook my head repeatedly.
