The Devil

From the Devil Island incident to the 7.15 bombing, and even the usual mutant-related incidents, most people are incredibly resistant to mutants. This resistance is often fueled by extremists who organize protest marches and spread propaganda about the supposed evil and dangers of mutants. This has led to a widespread fear of mutants, which in turn breeds hatred.

The fear of the unknown plays a significant role in this situation. People are naturally afraid of things they don't understand, and this fear often leads to irrational behavior and prejudice. As a result, many people choose to distance themselves from mutants, and some extremists have even resorted to violent attacks and expulsions.

This situation has become particularly challenging in Atlanta. If it were to spread across the entire United States, the consequences would be dire. Many people have fled to Mexico to escape the persecution, prompting the Mexican government to build a wall to keep mutants out.

The blind obedience of the people exacerbates the situation. When extremists target mutants, most people choose to remain silent, fearing the consequences of speaking out. Those who do voice their support for mutants are met with resistance, and over time, fewer and fewer people dare to stand up for mutants.

The Scavengers, a group of extreme mutants, are a prime example of this blind obedience. They believe they have been chosen by a higher power to destroy mutants and are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their goal. They see themselves as righteous warriors, unafraid of the dangers posed by mutants.

In this environment, individuals like Max, who refuse to conform to societal norms, are seen as a threat. Max's defiance of the Scavengers' authority and his ability to stand up to them only serves to further anger them. Despite their anger, however, they know they are powerless against him.

When Jestner, a member of the Sentinel Secret Service, arrives on the scene, he acknowledges Max's presence but chooses not to take action. Jestner knows that Max is wanted, but he also knows that Max has not caused any trouble. Instead of escalating the situation, Jestner decides to let Max go, recognizing that capturing him would only lead to unnecessary casualties.

Max, however, is aware that Jestner will not let him go for long.

Max smirked, stroking his beard as he watched a strange phenomenon unfold. A door materialized on the ground, emanating from his position and rapidly expanding.

"Step back! Step back!" Jestner's voice trembled with urgency as he called out to Roar. Everyone retreated hastily, creating a safe distance of over ten meters as the door continued to spread. Suddenly, a deafening bang echoed, and the massive door appeared to swing open. In an instant, both scavengers and cars on the street vanished, as if swallowed by the earth.

It felt like the ground itself was convulsing, akin to an earthquake.

After a few heart-pounding seconds, the bizarre gate vanished as quickly as it had appeared, leaving behind a deathly silence.

The Sentinel Secret Service agents and onlookers stood frozen in fear, stunned by the inexplicable event.

"Much better," Max remarked calmly, his gaze sweeping the area before he turned away dismissively. "I've got a short fuse. If you can't kill me, don't provoke me. Feeling agitated? Got a temper? Deal with it!"

Glancing around, he gestured for action. "What are you waiting for? Start digging to rescue anyone trapped underground!"

Jestner shouted helplessly, prompting the agents to scramble into action, desperately attempting to unearth those buried beneath the rubble. Tragically, they found only lifeless bodies, their fate sealed long before the rescue efforts began.

News of the incident spread rapidly throughout the small town, causing a sensation.

Max couldn't help but notice the effect he had on the streets. People fled at the mere sight of him, and even small shops shuttered their doors. It was as if the town had been visited by a specter of horror.

"What's going on?" Lauren approached, panting, her arms laden with bags. "Why did everyone on the street disappear all of a sudden? Even the shops closed while I was shopping!"

"The Devil has arrived," Max remarked casually.

"Where?" Lauren scanned the surroundings eagerly, oblivious to the presence of any ominous figure.

"Me!" Max chuckled, revealing his identity with a hint of mischief.

Lauren was taken aback and fixed her gaze on Max. He grinned and explained, "It's nothing much, just helped out a few puzzled and confident guys. The impact might be a tad overwhelming."

"Did you manage to get everything?" Lauren inquired.

"Nah," Max replied.

"Then keep going. As long as I'm not there, it should be fine. Oh, and if you run into someone from the Sentinel Secret Service, don't stress. They won't dare harm you. Once you're done shopping, head to the car and find me," Max advised Lauren.

After a moment of hesitation, Lauren nodded and resumed her shopping. Max's assurance seemed to put her at ease.

It took over an hour for Lauren to return, laden with numerous bags.

"Did you buy the whole store?" Max joked.

Setting the bags down, they both got into the car.

"Some of these are gifts for others," Lauren explained.

Max smiled and started the car, heading towards a different part of town. "Any for me?"

"Oh, definitely," Lauren responded.

"Really? What is it?" Max asked, curious.

"It's a suprise," Lauren teased with a slight tilt of her head.

Max couldn't help but look forward to this mysterious gift.
