Huangfu Xian awoke to the sound of slurping.
As he opened his eyes, he realized he was lying in an unfamiliar room with crude beams above him. The walls didn't resemble those of the Imperial Palace nor a farmhouse; a large wardrobe sat at the end of the room beside a desk.
Opposite the bed was a window letting in bright daylight.
Perhaps it is instinctual for all beings to be drawn to light, Huangfu Xian subconsciously glanced toward the direction of the incoming light. It was too bright, forcing him to squint.
Slurp, slurp.
The sound of saliva came again.
After taking a moment to adjust to the light, Huangfu Xian opened his eyes once more and saw a cradle near the window.
The cradle was originally higher than the bed, but its railings were openwork, and Huangfu Xian could clearly see the little baby inside.
The baby was sucking on his fingers, and that was the source of the slurping sounds.
