What's the question?" he asked, his tone serious.

Matilda lowered her head, and when she lifted it again, her eyes were red and teary. She asked him seriously, 

"Devin, do you still love me, or do you just want the child? Please answer me truthfully."

Devin's resilience broke, and confusion washed over him. He couldn't understand why she would ask such a question, and although he had a response ready, he sensed that she wasn't prepared to hear it.

"I will answer the question when the time is right," he replied.

Disappointment flashed in Matilda's eyes, and her resolve crumbled. She accused him in a painful tone, 

"I knew it. You've fallen out of love with me. You're only with me because of the baby."

Devin found her accusation offensive, but he didn't take it to heart. He knew he had been distant lately, but he had good reason for it.
