Three hours, that is how long our peace and quiet lasted until we got attacked again. As always we managed to break them before the grounders could even reach our line.
"We did, Leon. We repelled another attack."
I didn't bother answering Monroe as we all watched the grounder running away across the tunnel, back toward their camp. Unfortunately, for the grounder army, some of the grounders didn't die from the bullets and as a result, their cries echoed in the tunnels, making anyone rethink their decision of going once more to the slaughters. While some of my guards wanted to chase and kill the rest of the grounders, the truth was that I wasn't confident chasing after them, especially now that we are only a handful of guys and girls trying to protect this whole bunker.
One of the guards kept firing at the fleeing grounders, wasting our precious ammunition while at the same time missing most of the shots He fired on and on, in some sort of trance, until his assault rifle stopped firing.
"Stop it, Liam! That's enough, enough!"
His friend took the rifle from his hands while the man kept muttering the same words over and over again.
"They were out of it. They were all right. They were going to attack, they are here…"
While Liam was being carried inside the bunker, Mike walked to me, smiling from ear to ear as we get a few hours of peace.
"Did you see the sons of bitches crying? Did you see them run? Chief, I swear they are as stupid as most donkeys."
"It's not about being dumb here, Mike…It's about having the proper equipment. I remember reading one of Pike's books when I was up in the Ark about the First World War and the more we fight down here, the more this looks like we went back in time. We have the means of fighting a prolonged war against them down here, but if we were to fight in the open or in the woods…the only thing that would have waited for us there would have been death."
"Luckily for us, we are fighting underground. Since we are barely sweating, should we ask for more grounders to shoot at? It's better than doing nothing anyways."
Just as I was about to say something, someone from our side let out a scream, albeit a suppressed one. We all turned in surprise to see a woman holding her leg with her hands while screaming out in pain.
"What happened to her?"
"An arrow pierced my leg, that's what happened! Bloody savages caught me by surprise!"
"I thought we'd be out of the way, with all of the roofs over our heads."
"You all right mam?"
"Yeah. Just had to bandage the leg and I'll as good as new, Chief so don't you dare send me inside or I swear I will burn all of your clothes."
Suddenly the walkie-talkie that was tied to my belt resounded with Wells's voice.
"Leon here. What's up, Wells is it done?"
"Kind of, I mean I simply had to combine bleach and ammonia. To be fair, Leon, I still don't think it's a good idea to unleash this in the tunnels."
"We can use the fans to blow the air towards the grounders while keeping our site safe. At the same time, we have more than enough suits to further increase our protection from it."
"Fine, take a few guys and come get your new toy. Thanks to Raven's past invention, I managed to modify the flamethrower into a gas thrower. Hopefully, this will be the last day we have to fight against the grounders. Who are the rest of the guys?"
"We have one injured. She was hit by an arrow. And Liam…he's getting worse than before."
"That guy needs to be left away from the fight for a while. His luck is bad as it can be, thought its better than the last time he thought he was fighting invisible grounders. Damn, now that I think about it, he's quite unlucky."
"Isn't he?"
We both shared a laugh before Wells told me that he needs to go back to making more bullets for us in case our new weapon fails to scare the grounders away. While I wanted to pick the gas thrower by myself, I couldn't exactly let these guys alone down here while I got inside where it was safe. Even though until now the grounders didn't manage to breach past the five meters mark, we are starting to get low on ammo, especially on our machine guns.
"Think we can fend them off again?"
"I don't see why not. We managed to do it until now. Besides, I hope that we have more ammunition than they have men. "
"We're pretty good on ammo for another attack or so, but they'll be back, Leon. As they always do."
"I know. How many you grounders do you think are left?"
"I don't know—more than one that's for sure. Why do you ask?"
"Wells made me a weapon that we hope would end this pointless fight. Since we barely have any fuel left to use in the flame thrower, he modify it to throw gas at the enemy and even made one of the most horrible gasses made by mankind to use against the grounders."
"Leon… we already slaughter them like sheep. These poor guys won't even know what hit them if we unleash the gas on them."
"You think they wouldn't have done the same thing to us if we were to be the grounders and they the Skykru? Or have you forgotten what they had done to our people in the first days?"
"No, Leon. I haven't forgotten that. I know this war is just one of the reasons to get rid of us, but even then, we are slowly becoming scarier than them, don't you think?"
"That's why, before we would use the gas on them, I will ask their leader to leave this mountain alone. Despite killing more than five hundred grounders in the past weeks, we are not monsters. We simply defended our home and I would rather end this pointless assault than continue killing them until nothing is left of their army. Anya probably hates me right now for what I had to do down here, the same thing for Clarke, no doubt Lexa's feeling the same, but despite everything, I'm willing to make peace with whoever is in charge of this assault."
"You can't go there! They would do everything in their power to kill you!"
"Zoe…if that's the price we have to pay to attain peace, I'm more than happy to sacrifice myself so that all of you survive. Besides, even if I were to die somehow, you guys have the gas throwers. I have no doubts that you would avenge me the moment my body hits the floor."
"Fine, you are way too stubborn to listen anyways. Promise me that you will come back, no matter what. I want to talk to you about something when you return."
"Sure thing. I promise you that I will come back in one piece."
