Chapter 46 - The Messiah (1)

As soon as Abby left the room, Byrne signaled me and Finn to follow her while the rest of our friends could only look at us as we reluctantly made our way out of my room. We continue to trail behind Byrne as she led us to the armory.

The moment we walk into the room, almost all of the guards that were gearing up turned their heads and look at us, slightly confused why Major Byrne brought two teenagers to them, but even though they were curious, all of the guards follow the usual code and salute their leader.

"At ease, boys. John, Mike come here and meet your recruits."

A few seconds, two guys walked out of the group of guards and saluted Byrne before they glanced at Finn.

"With all due respect mam, but since when do we allow kids into our ranks?"

"Since now, Mike, is there a problem? They may not look like much, but these two idiots had fought more bloody battles than all of us combined, so in my book, they are more than worthy or ready to enlist into our ranks."

Byrne's words shut the guy's mouth, but I could see his unwillingness to have two teenagers on his team and even I have to admit he wasn't wrong to believe that we were the same as most kids that didn't experience the horrors of war. Woefully for us, Thelonious threw us right into the bloodiest war our people have been into since we left Earth.

"John, as the team leader, I want you to properly equip these two and then bring them to the briefing room, I have a mission for your team, now that you have more than enough people in it."

"Roger that mam." Byrne didn't wait any longer and after she heard John, she simply left the room, while Finn and I followed John to a set of lockers where the rest of his team was waiting. Five guys, including the four of us and two women, that's were on our team.

After he had given us our new set of clothes, John introduced the other members of our team: the third guy's name was Logan while the women were May and Nana, and even though no one mentioned anything, both Finn and I could see how much these people hate us for some reason unknown to us as of yet.

Shortly after we returned to the team wearing, the attire all guards wear, John told us to follow him to the briefing room. It didn't take us a long to reach that place and not even a second after we had stepped into the room, Byrne's voice was heard from the other side of the room.

"Good, you two look like proper people for once. John, your mission will be quite simple in theory. You and your team have to find an emergency bunker that is supposed to have weapons and supplies that we really need. When you find that place, I want you to take everything that your team could carry and return to camp A.S.A.P."

"We'll depart immediately, mam, but I have a question regarding our mission."

"I'm listening, sergeant."

"If by chance we are ambushed or attacked by the grounders what should we do? Do we fight back or do we run away, hoping that they won't chase after us?"

"You are allowed to engage them, but only if you are attacked first, I don't want another incident like the one from two days ago, is that clear private?"

Finn nodded at Byrne and even though I know why she said that I still can't understand why she would send Finn on this risky mission, especially when the grounders are hunting for him.

Four hours later, my team was setting our camp for the night. As I was about to rummage through the backpack that I was given, I heard the unfamiliar voice of my new leader. As soon as I opened my tent, John greeted me, as for why he was outside my tent? He was curious about the newest recruit to his team, so he decided to talk with both of us. We talked for a while, and I don't remember exactly how we ended up talking about the fog, but one thing was for sure, that thing wasn't something anyone was willing to experience.

"I can't believe something like this exists…so let me get this straight, this...acid fog that you have mentioned, it burns people alive to the point of death? Or it simply burns you to a certain point, letting the pain and the infection kill you?"

"It's worse than that, I mean, I'm sure it's more painful than being burnt at a campfire since it seems to somehow force your system to slowly shut down before you die, but in the end, the acid fog is the worst weapon possible. We don't know how long it'll last, either because we only experience it once and thankfully we managed to hide inside the dropship before anyone could be seriously injured or killed by it. Until we find the source of it, we'll have to be careful."

"If you have to guess, what do you think produces it? Was it just some random phenomena that happened because of the radiations?"

"It could be a natural phenomenon or maybe not really. From what I saw, before all of this, we didn't know why it happened, but..."

"Is this related to what Dr. Griffin's daughter told us?"

"Kind of, when the fog appeared ... it looked like it was coming from the mountain."

"Mount Weather may be the cause of this fog…most likely they use it as a weapon against the grounders or as a matter of fact against anyone that may desire the mountain or its surroundings."

"Sadly Clarke didn't manage to learn more about it or even find out if it's really related to the bunker, but she did find out that the reappears and Mt. Weather is working together."

"These reapers are the cannibals that you guys have warned us about?"

"Yes, we didn't fight them, but with the help of a grounder that was against the war, we managed to bring a rather big army of reapers to thin out the number of grounders that were assaulting our camp before my friends were taking away by the mountain men."

"I see. Thank you for speaking with me, Kennedy, you should rest while you can, since tomorrow we will find ourselves in hell."

"See you in the morning, sir."

Meanwhile, the other team that was led by Abby was taking cover in their tents since they found themselves right into the acid fog.

The acid fog had lasted much longer than it should have or maybe it just felt that way because Clarke and her mother sat there in pure silence for the rest of the time after their little fight back at Camp Jaha. When the fog dispersed in the morning, all of them had to pack their tents and the explosives they didn't use on Mt. Weather jammer to bomb the towers thanks to Raven, who found an alternative way of using the jammer and rather than blowing it up, we would instead listen on the enemy.

Unfortunately, as soon as the team returned back to the camp, their rather peaceful surroundings were disturbed when a few moments later there was a shout in the distance.

"Help!" Was heard from the bushes. Right after the shout was heard, three of the guards that were guarding the gate walked forward ready to use their guns at the person that had a death wish. As always, Clarke was unable to stay away from something even a little dangerous, so she began to walk towards the gate, only to see a familiar black man stepping out from within the forest with his hands in the air, and as soon as the people saw him, all of them recognized the man.

Thelonious Jaha was the one who walked from within the forest and told his men to stand down. He walked over to Abby, his body covered in blood and his face swollen from suffering quite a few beating back in the grounder prison. When Abby saw him, her eyes widened in both shock and relief, but something deep inside her heart made her frown.

"Thelonious, you…how?"

Jaha breathed heavily and fell to his knees, looking at the Ark station that was in front of him. Clarke walked up to Raven and Monroe's sides, witnessing Jaha's mysterious and somewhat miraculous return to their camp.

The Chancellor grabbed Abby's hand to help himself up as he barely muttered.

"I have a message...from the Commander. Leave...or die. We have two days to decide!"
