There were three Buddhas in total. The Buddha of the past, Dipamkara, was an old man with one foot in the grave. He held a Lamp of Hellfire in his hand, representing the past of Buddhism and the evil karma of the world. The Buddha of the present, Tathagata, was a middle-aged Buddha with a chubby face and big ears. He had a kind face. He was on a lotus flower, he represented the present of Buddhism and also controlled the merits of Buddhism. The last Buddha was the Buddha of the future, Maitreya, a young monk. Behind him, a Wondrous Tree of Seven Treasures swayed, representing the future of Buddhism and gathering the fate of Buddhism.
