The last beacon

Mira and Cairo breathed a collective sigh of relief as they watched the mutant's squirming tentacles curl up and stop moving. The mutant's whole body was burnt to a crisp. Their plan had worked perfectly, despite the initial scare.

Having dealt with the abomination, the sisters returned to Ana. The poor girl's face was wet with tears, and she was trembling all over. Not being able to see anything only made the situation worse. All she could do was cry for help.

"Mira? Cairo? Please don't leave me here."

"We're here, Ana." Mira helped the rookie get back on her feet and put an arm around her shoulder. "The mutant's dead. You don't need to worry anymore."

"What happened? How...did you kill it?"

"It's a long story," Cairo sighed. "We'll tell you once we get back to Lazarus."
