“Good. She is with you, you know. You’re all she ever talks about.”
Cameron nodded and made a mental note to be even more careful what she said to Gina. “She’ll get over it. One of us will get out of here and she’ll forget all about me.”
Ruth sat back and examined Cam for a long moment. “What makes you tick, Andrews? Why are you here?”
Cam was taken aback. Where was Ruth heading? “You wanted to know what Pauly knew,” she stammered, buying time.
“No, I mean, why are you in this hellhole?”
Cam sat back. So Ruth was doing her own checking. “Does it make a difference?”
“I like to know people. I’d like to know your side of it.” Ruth studied her.
Cam thought for a moment. “I don’t know.” She admitted, as she’d rehearsed. “I got greedy, cocky, thought I knew how to beat the system.”
“You learn anything?” Ruth was grilling her. “If you want to tell me to mind my own business, go ahead. I’m a nosey old lady.” Ruth chuckled.
