When they were done with lunch, Nessa sent her band of unwilling workers off to their rooms to dress for the wedding.
Upstairs, Evan saw an opportunity for a last happy moment with Danny. All morning long whenever they’d tried for some time together, Nessa had appeared and sent them off on separate errands. Evan snagged Danny’s arm and pulled him into the bedroom.
Wrapping his arms around Evan, Danny groaned. “Thank God. I needed to hold you.”
“I know. It’s been a difficult morning. And didn’t it seem like your mother was purposely orchestrating duties to keep us apart?”
“Maybe she’s worried about bad luck if the groom sees the bride before the wedding?”
Evan snorted. “Well, isn’t it fortunate for us that there’s no bride today?”
Danny pulled Evan forward and kissed the top of his head. He murmured, “Very fortunate.”
The two spent the next few minutes just clinging to each other. Finally, Evan pulled away and, with a look of regret, said, “We really have to get ready.”
