50 kids lined up in front of the Sage orb.
"No element! No element! No element!"
The examination had started off poorly, several kids lined up had their hearts torn in two. Ezel sighed, this was the worst part of the job. Many will come but few will get lucky and win.
Getting close to the front of the line was Eden standing behind Aerith.
Aerith and Eden, growing up in Elkwood village have known each other since they were young. Their relationship was amiable and both had great aspirations.
"Do you think you'll be able to get an element Aerith?" Eden turned around and asked.
"I don't know, I'll be glad to get anything. Father Engle has magic but mama does not" Aerith quietly replied. Anxiety and nervousness can be seen in her eyes. "What about you?"
"I am meant for greatness in this life! I will definitely be able to call an element! Today begins the great story of Eden!" exclaimed Eden, he had a shit eating grin on his face.
"I wish I had the same confidence you did..." Aerith sighed.
"Cocky much Eden?" came a voice.
The voice came from a boy standing in front of Eden. A handsome young boy with blue hair and black eyes. "Look at all those before us. How many have been able to call upon an element. Zero. Not one. I come from a family full of people with water magic affinities and I'm shaking in my boots!"
The child speaking name was Morgan, who comes from the Lake family, the primary noble family that bases themselves in Elkwood Town. The Lake family was not particularly bossy or stuck-up. They treated everyone well and got along with all the residents of Elkwood. Growing up Morgan had a good rapport with all the kids in Elkwood village not once did he ever flaunt his status in front of the kids.
"Hehe Morgan, no need to be nervous you are going to probably get the water affinity too! I just have a high belief in myself. I'm not going to let anything bring me down!" grinned Eden.
"No element! Next!" shouted Ezel.
"It's my turn guys wish me luck!" said Morgan as he walked up to the orb.
"You don't need it!" replied Eden. "Believe in yourself!"
Morgan walked nervously up to the orb. Sweat dripping down his forehead.
'How much longer are we going to have no elements. What a talentless place this is... I can't wait to get out.' thought Ezel as Morgan was approaching, "No need to be nervous boy just place your hand on the orb and close your eyes."
Morgan placed his hand on the orb and closed his eyes. The orb began to fill with the color blue. Shortly after, the color black began to fill the orb. The colors spun around within the orb until they rested. The color blue on one half and the color black on the other.
"Oh my lord! Dual elements! Darkness and Water!" exclaimed Ezel. He was extremely excited for this kids future. "Wait... whats this... oh my god! The blue has a glacier symbol. My child, you have the ice unique trait!"
Ice was the unique trait of the water element and was relatively rare. It was mostly prominent with the Fjord family located in the Morata Kingdom, north of the Rivenhart Kingdom.
Upon gaining an elemental trait, the user loses their ability to perform the normal spells of the element they have obtained. In this case, Morgan would not be able to cast water elemental spells and can only cast ice trait spells.
The crowd was dumbfounded, there was a genius amongst them. They couldn't help but be jealous. This kid's future was going to be nothing but greatness. Not only that, Morgan had received a special trait as well for his elements.
"Wow Morgan! What did you even worry about!! DUAL ELEMENTS! You are amazing!!" shouted Eden. "Just wait until its my turn, I can't wait to show you my genius!"
"Heh Heh Eden. Good Luck!". Morgan stuck out his fist to Eden. "I think I am the first Ice trait in my family since great, great, great great, grandfather Elder Azur. Who would have thought. "
"Remember us when you are famous Morgan!" smiled Eden.
Aerith was next. Aerith proceeded to walk up after Morgan. The nervousness was at a breaking point for her. She placed her hand on the orb and closed her eyes, tears welling up.
A few moments went by and Ezel who was already shocked by Morgan's performance had another surprise waiting for him as he gasped, "Wind, Water, Fire, Earth Ahh ahh Affinity! FUH FUH FUH FOUR ELEMENTS???"
The crowd gasped. What was this! Morgan with dual elements and a trait? Aerith with four elements! How many years of luck did Elkwood just trade for this! Elkwood town is truly blessed! Even if no one else was able to call the elements, this was truly a boon for Elkwood town.
When news travels that highly talented youths have been identified by the orb, such as Morgan and Aerith, their roots will forever be traced back to Elkwood. This would lead to an increase in tourism and possibly the King providing rewards to the place of origin of a talented individual. Other nobles may send messengers bearing gifts to try and gain favor with the families. Sometimes academies will go into a bidding war to try and curry favor with the youth and their family to send them to their school.
Aerith walked off the stage in tears. She couldn't believe what had just occurred. She walked over to her dumbfounded father. "Aerith, another genius has been born in the Tempest family. I'll have to brag about you the next time I head back to the home village to visit your grandfather. I can already picture the look of shock on his face haha."
'I'm up next! I can't let them steal my thunder haha. I just have a good feeling I'm going to get something good!' Eden thought excitedly.
Eden whispered on the inside,"Please Fire. Please Fire. Please Fire. Come to me."
Eden proceeded to place his hand on the orb and close his eyes.
Just to be clear having a unique trait gives that area of focus to the user. Morgan will primarily be able to use ice magic and will not be able to use water affinity spells that are not ice related. That is the trade-off.
