Pokemons are pretty much just animals with superpowers, but then you realize that there are quite a few weird ones mixed in. I'll also point out that they have their own ecosystem, since that'll be a bit important later.
Generally their appearances make sense. So we have Geodude that looks like a rock and you can find them in caves. That is typical camouflage and makes perfect sense. Then you have those that look like cuter versions of actual animals and bugs. Also makes sense. Animate objects is pushing it, but those things can be summarized as supernatural phenomenons involving ghosts. And since it's most likely an object that's been possessed, it also probably doesn't need to eat.
But then some of the newer generations introduce things that look like desserts. Black and White introduced Vanillite, something that looks like ice cream and Sword and Shield introduced Alcremie, a pile of whipped cream with strawberries poking out.
Since pokemon are also just super powerful animals, wouldn't it be stupid to look like delicious food?
Unless...
This isn't just any kind of food, but man-made food...
Food that just happens to be really enticing for children...
