The first rule of betting against Luis Vanguard was simple. Never let him see that the prize mattered. For three days, he tried to make me talk about March fourteenth. Not directly. Luis rarely walked toward a difficult thing when he could circle it first. Blake played on the opposite side. I scored first. She scored next. When she ran back to the center, she did not celebrate. Near the end, Teo sent a pass between two defenders. Blake and I reached it together from different angles. Our shoulders hit. She stayed on her feet. So did I. The ball rolled ahead. I could have taken it. Instead I left it for her because her angle was better. She scored. Coach blew the whistle. "That," she shouted, "is what happens when strikers stop treating each other like a disease." Blake turned toward me. "Why did you leave it?" she asked. "You had the shot." "You always want the shot."

The video began with Blake smiling in my number nine shirt. Then came the nutmeg, the team's shout, and Cass scoring. It ended with Blake looking into the camera while gold words appeared across the screen. OLD FIRE. NEW BLOOD. The sponsor had added a crown above my head and a flame behind hers. Noah sent the video to the team group with twelve laughing faces. I removed him from the group. He added himself back because he was an administrator. "You know deleting me makes it funnier," he said when I entered the breakfast room. I filled a cup with coffee. "I know where you park." "Threats before oats. Very professional." Blake sat across the room with Cass and Teo. Her brother had arrived early that morning. I knew because Ben, the driver, texted to say the boy had argued for twenty minutes and then carried every heavy box himself. Blake had replied with one word.

His hand spread over the fabric at my stomach. Not low. Not improper. Still too close. I could feel his breathing near my ear. He released me at once. "In a match, that is a foul," I said. My voice sounded steady. I was proud of it. "Only if the official sees it." I turned. We were closer than we needed to be.
