So firstly Shicun created a earth covering over his arm to stop the bleeding effect from losing his arm which a large reason Senjo Ran lost (blood loss). That combined with is use of Earth release jutsus and his notible skills mentioned that had that let him take down people of a higher rank than him, made him dangerous and Ye Zi wasn't prepared for that. Ye Zi still would of won the fight either way though since Shicun lost his arm. When it came to Ran, he timed his surprise attack better and Ran suffered a huge deep cut in his back making the blood loss pretty bad and it seems he had no technique to stop the blood loss. Since Dato Kan was there, Ran and no other chose but to try escape but a weakened version of himself made it so he died pretty quickly. Either way, Ye Zi probably wouldn't of been able to kill the both normally, he was even luckier the second time and Ran was caught in a even worst position since he was focused on the final blow to Dato and Ye Zi arguably had better experience after the first surprise attack he tried on Shicun.
