Fletcher (mc) got a vision from his demon (pokemon style battle pet) from like 2000 years ago. In that vision the orcs (first beings to summon and bind to demons, giving them access to mana) are using magic by pushing mana through tattoos on their fingers and palms instead of drawing the runes in the air. Fletcher then asks his dwarven friends dad’s blacksmithing assistant to tattoo some spells into his hand and a summoning pentacle onto his hand. This is done the night before the end of year tournament so it still hurts him a little when ever he uses that hand.

He just scraped by in math after talking to his teacher after class.

Cause that magic system only needed organic materials and mana. Fairly sure this one needs good materials (not finger tattoos) and a lot of detail with exact scales. Plus the symbols need to be of a similar size to the object of i read correctly. Your hand or back is only part of you.

Sounds kinda cool. Read some stories with a similar premise. I know there is a Skyrim fanfic where the mc becomes addicted to magic highs so he gets mana potions made for arch mages distilled and put into cigars. He basically spends most of the time after that reading, magicing and smoking.
