It is a very stupid strategy to send units this far apart. you could simply have knights split between your infantry and have nearly 3 to 1 fights. Sure it limits explosive damage, but now your army is fighting for attrition, not to win.

there was literally no reason for him to do that, even he would benefit greatly from 30+ mutant cores.

A lot of discrepancies and too much flavour text at times make it hard to read, but finding a better novel is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
