Reason? In the end the protagonist just goes with the flow where the story takes him. On reaching Liyue he is given the choice to complete a quest with no clear clue. What was the punishment? He always thought about that until the last moment. The options were to be punished by the admins for not completing the quest or doing that action... seeing how the protagonist's personality was, the second option had to be done for his own benefit.
