Actually my bad I read you comment incorrectly so ignore the other comment but still the author isn’t really using it as a slang he is more so using it like a descriptive word

Cringing at things is not a gen z or gen alpha thing it has been around for a long time the word cring has just been more popular for the past decade or so, so it makes sense that the author is using the word cring to show what the characters are feeling
