Lore wise, that’s actually the best kind of solution due to the importance of symbolism the Warp gives everything. That’s why Fire and melee weapons are so much effective on Daemons, due to people believing for so long that such things are effective against Evil and the Dark Forces.

Not when, in the Harry Potter World, Merlin, who was supposed to be quite a bit older than Arthur, was a Slytherin, meaning he went to Hogwarts. And to go to Hogwarts, it needs to have been a functioning institution, thus making him between 30-50 younger than the Founders at least. Gawain being around Arthur’s age kind of makes it impossible for Godric to be a descendent of. Would’ve have been better if Gawai a squib nephew or something, someone who he still loved.
