Now, my review of this story will show that I haven’t read any chapters yet. However, this is because I have been reading this story on Einlion’s patreon. So to clarify, I am currently at chapter 49 as of writing this review. Overall, for those of you who read EPIC, which this story is the “sequel” of, you’ll find yourself starting the story accompanying the Vahn Mason we were introduced to at the very start of EPIC. For those of you who haven’t read EPIC, reading this story may confuse you a little as there are some moments where context of how things were done (The Path a.k.a his System, his abilities, etc.) might not be explained as thoroughly as it was first done in EPIC. Though that said, it is explained pretty well that I doubt it would cause any real confusion. Honestly, the only part that truly required reading EPIC was the very first chapter of this book. The vague, “flowery” descriptions at the very start only truly make sense and can be fully understood if you’ve read the entirety of EPIC. BUT, it isn’t required to enjoy the rest of the story. So, what can you expect? Well, for context, specifically for those of you who are new to/haven’t read EPIC, you’re introduced to the character Vahn Mason, an innocent, somewhat naive (sometimes awfully so), boy with a pretty fucked up past. How fucked up? Well, dude was born with special blood that can cure any illness/disease while simultaneously making him immune to any poison/medicine, including alcohol and (this is especially relevant) anesthesia of any kind. His only relative (his mom) died in childbirth. Thus, he was taken to a secret facility where he was “raised”, spending his every waking moment getting experimented on, testing the limits of his blood’s capabilities. This included almost daily drains of blood, so much so they literally attached a faucet to one of his arteries, amputations that were done without the use of anesthesia due to his immunity, using straps around his neck to restrict blood flow so he would only be “semi-conscious”, yet still lucid as they sawed off his arms and legs so he couldn’t try to commit suicide, and a whole slew of other horrific things. Throughout his “childhood”, his only forms of relief were the anime and manga the “doctors”, specifically his psychiatrist, provided him to keep him somewhat sane. Thus, he grew up with characters like Naruto, Luffy, Goku, etc. as his role models, shaping his morals to what they are at the start of the story. This is why he is often seen as highly naive. His only life experience was one of complete isolation from the world and typical common sense, where the only places he could truly learn about human interaction were from his various anime/manga, and his interactions with his psychiatrist. This shaped him into a person who is kind by default (because the anime protagonist were), displaying a polite and innocent personality, unaware of things most boys his age would be. That being said, where he differs from what you’d expect of goody-goody anime protagonists is that, when facing those he truly considers enemies, his ruthlessness towards them is extreme. For whatever amount of kindness and innocence he shows to those he cares about or has no immediate opinion for, the same can be said for the brutality he delivers to those who threaten that which he considers precious. This story shows Vahn in Highschool DxD, somewhat following the plot of the anime, but displaying Einlion’s flare for expanding upon the known world, adding his own details that blend perfectly well with canon. Here he’ll meet the expected characters found in this specific “Record”, where his personality, morals, and character are further developed and challenged through his interactions with them, pushing his growth as a character in a different direction than how he had developed in the original story. So, for those of you who have read EPIC, welcome back. I hope you’re as excited as I am to see the return on Vahn. I can’t wait to see how he might differ from the original story when meeting the people of DxD instead of Danmachi! And for those of you who are new, welcome! I hope you enjoy this story as much as I know I will, and I hope that my explanation (though a tad bit spoilery) provided some much needed context for you on your journey through this new “Record”! Have fun!

His job as an author is to put out stories. EPIC, the title of the original work this story is sequelling, is clearly in the title. If you pick up a book in the bookstore and read it, only to be confused about the story because it is the second book of a series, it’s not the author’s fault that you didn’t know that. You just saw the title and cover, thought it was a potential good read, and chose it. If it was confusing, maybe a bit of research on your part would’ve done you some good instead of immediately jumping into the reviews to complain. 😂

Fuckin S-Tier review, this. Couldn’t have summed up my feelings of Vahn as a character any better. A lot of people used to (and still do) complain that Vahn’s naive personality, the little bundle of innocence that he is at the start of both EPIC and this, meant that he was a shit character, often likened to those Japanese MC’s that roll over and forgive his enemies after beating them. Those who say that? You clearly have no clue of ruthlessness and sheer brutality that Vahn dishes out against people whom he truly considers his enemies. Touch The Sage Dragon Emperor’s reverse scale and retribution of the highest caliber, the peak of whatever Record they inhabit, is all that they can expect in the future.

Are the chapters out of order? This chapter was apparently changed today? The next chapter makes no sense continuity-wise.

Is this the right chapter? Last chapter was selling the Healing Herbs from the Dirt Farmers. Where did this goblin thing come in? Who the fuck is Greenbean?!

Did I miss something? The chapter seems out of order somehow? Last chapter was finding the Dirt Farmers…. Why is it goblins now?
