Just because of where they're going. They'll need a boat eventually to reach Hawaii, but going from New York to the California there's no body of water you could take that would get you as far as something like a direct train trip. Unless you went all the way around through the Panama Canal, but that takes way longer, like when Luke's cruise ship disappears for most of a year in cannon when he sails it to SF.
