I can't remember exactly what happened, but didn't Vaughn make a skill or item or whatever to allow Valyr to toggle the curse on and off? He said something about doing it in a realm with extreme time dilation.

Cmon, 1 million years is ridiculous for just this. If it was some crazy unlikely thing that was found by chance then fine (but even then way too long), but this is the sort of thing any research team would think of and try out in at most like 20 years. I get that this is fantasy, but surely it would be better if things made sense in-universe at least
