alright, you got a point. armour and handguards are useless until you run out of Haki juice, and you'd have bigger problems by then. as for armor, it's a nearly sunken world, and wearing something bulky is a great way to drown in a naval battle. the extra mass could also be replaced with rations. and, resources are scarce, especially those needed for good armor. most goes into cannonballs, guns, swords and WG stuff.

Thing is, though, Haki acts as a hardness amplifier, makes metal far harder than skin or else nobody would bother using a sword at all. hence, a hand guard is still useful, and this kid is not Roger
