Fractured Souls

After losing his parents, siblings, and friends in a freak accident, Samuel leaned on his remaining family—his revered uncle, his cousins, and his grandparents, who were also mourning their daughter’s death. Disclaimer: The protagonist of this novel is not a self-centered sociopath driven solely by self-interest. You will find the main character empathizing with both strangers and adversaries. However, empathy does not mean he will assist everyone or forgive unforgivable actions simply because he understands his enemy's plight. This is not a story where the protagonist views events in black and white. If you seek a novel with a purely self-serving hero, this may not be the right choice for you. While I consider myself still learning, I am inspired by authors like George R. R. Martin, who taught me the complexity of moral dilemmas and the nuanced spectrum of right and wrong. I aimed to create authentic characters with distinct personalities, pasts, and characteristics that influence their reactions to events in the story. This applies to the main character and the supporting cast. Romance may or may not develop between characters in the novel. Please enjoy the story and leave feedback; it motivates me to continue writing. I am submitting this novel for the Webnovel Spirit Awards under the theme "Fantasy & Adventure: New Tropes." While my twist on the genre might not be entirely new in fiction, I haven't encountered a story quite like this on Webnovel. Though I can't reveal much without spoiling, I assure you it offers a fresh take on familiar themes.

Postmortem - It Begins with Death

Samuel Cromwell had to endure many great misfortunes in his life. He used to be a sheltered lad with a happy family and close friends, however, since his childhood he escaped deaths grasp a countless number of times. He survived many dangerous situations without even realizing that he was in danger in the first place. Until one day, he survived a tragic accident that claimed the lives of his family members and friends, leaving him alone and as the sole survivor of his Cromwell family. But in spite of that, he was determined to fight fate and keep on living. He would not only keep his life but also enjoy every minute of it cherishing his life and achieving the common dream he had once shared with his best friends. Yet, soon after they died he was plagued with unendurable guilt and thoughts that tormented his very soul. Although he didn't experience life-threatening situations anymore, he was now under psychological pressure, as if something was attacking his mind. He knew that the deaths of those he loved were not his fault but those thoughts kept coming back over and over again, almost as if they were a plague. They kept urging him to end his life to rejoin his loved ones in the afterlife. But were these thoughts really caused by Fate or were they actual manifestations of what he really wanted to do?
