Chapter 1: I Wanted To Be A Doctor

I wanted to be a doctor...

I never wanted to hurt anyone...

But my arm's locked into place, sweat and rain is raining down my face, an I'm shaking as I hold out a rusted colt, the trigger pulled, and a corpse laying dead on the floor.

What do I do? I Never wanted to hurt anyone. I wanted to become a doctor to save people, not unalive them.

Why did this have to happen. . .Why did this happen?

I can't go to the guards, if I do that they'll discover I'm a vampire, and standing here I don't even think I could go to one even if I tried, my legs won't move; I'm shaking.

Why's this happening to me, why'd it happen today. . .

My mind's racing and I don't know what to do, looking down at the cloaked body on the floor, wearing all black with wooden weapons and stakes inside of his cloak.

Holding his gun and dropping it, should I just flee?

No, I know what I have to do...

It's unethical but I have to..

It's for my own survival.

* * * * *14 Hours Prior* * * * *

I wanted to become a doctor...

And yet looking into the mirror, to my candle white skin and blood red eyes, putting on black contact lenses an putting my long raven black hair into a bun, I put on my uniform and got ready for work. . .Work as a cashier...

It's been 3 years since I left the vampire realm, but life didn't get any better, when I came here I was alone an had no idea what to do until I came to the human city.

But their language was different from ours, so it took some time to get used to... Even now, I'm hesitant to speak, it sounds like I'm shy, but honestly, I'm afraid.

And I haven't been able to do anything, it took a while but I finally gained my citizenship after 3 years, and I even found somewhat of a decent home to live in...

It's not much but it's a good start.

Way better than when I first arrived here.

I've come to like the quietness here.

Finishing getting dressed, and yawning as I didn't get much sleep last night, I left my apartment in the west district and walked to the east district where I worked.

Getting there, it was closed, the sun hasn't even shown up yet and if I remember right, it should be around 7am, so taking out my keys an opening the shop, I clocked in.

. . . . .

Standing there half-dead at the counter, my stomach growled, and looking next to the register, I saw a half eaten beef stick, Charlie must have left it yesterday.

Not complaining about its condition or how long it's been left out here, I grabbed it distastefully and ate it.

It tasted horrible, I wanted to puke it up, but I couldn't, I can barely afford utilities with how much this job pays, so I can't refuse a free meal like this so early in the day.

Waiting for someone to show up, whether it's Charlie, Susan, and or a customer. I don't mind being alone, but it was way too boring right now, and way too early too.

Waiting for a customer or anyone to clock in, I checked the back for somethin to read in the meanwhile, I found an old book the Manager's son left here, and so I took it.

Bringing it back up there to read, I leaned up against the counter reading and waiting. . .Waiting for a while now, "Ah, so he was a cuck the whole time" I realized an said out loud to myself as the doorbell rang. And not looking up to greet whoever came in as this weird book oddly caught my interest with how random it was, I heard a cough, and footsteps walking in the other direction.

*Grabbing a can from the back of the store a highschool girl couldn't help but peek a glance at the lady up front. She sees her every morning at this time but she couldn't help it, with the nametag of Catherine Salvatore, the lady looked glamorous, with her skin as white as snow but as pretty as a shiny pearl, her hair was silky and black, and her eyes were the same as her hair, she wasn't like the women here in the human's city, she looked beautiful like some idol, charming like someone you'd only see in a dream, an looking at her as she read a light novel, she could tell that Catherine wasn't wearing even an ounce of makeup, she was all natural and way too beautiful*

*The only problem was... After seeing her working here since she was a freshman(so last year), she has always wanted to at least talk to her, but she's never worked up the courage for it, but today, she wanted to at least say something to her. Because she saw Catherine as cool*

*So grabbing a canned good, and a packed sandwich, she made her way down the store to the cash register, putting the items on the counter, Catherine glanced*

Feeling the counter shake, I glanced up to see a school girl placing down her items, "Oh..." I said not thinking, I almost forgot I was working, "My apologies, I didn't see you coming," I said to her, looking down at her stuff.

Grabbing the two items and glancing at the value price of them, *The girl panicked as she thought she startled her,* "No! Don't worry, it's nice t... Uh... Your good miss"

*Catching herself. . . Her nervousness intensified. . .*

Putting them into a paper bag, and sliding it over, yawing an grabbing the book I was reading, "Um..." the girl said, and glancing back to her, "You didn't tell me how much I owe?" she said takin' out her coin pouch, but I chuckled.

And smiling, I leaned against the counter an put a hand against my cheek, "It's on me today," and hearing me her face died, she looked anxious but then it became blank, and I just said, "Now get to school, and good luck kid~"

I was feeling nice today, this kid comes in almost every day to buy herself lunch, an judging by the uniform she goes to Oceanic High, a local school I even went to for some time; to get a little information on this city here.

And by doing this she suddenly looked shocked, and I couldn't help but laugh at her reaction, but then she had this bright smile shining over her, and she thanked me.

"Wait really?!" she asked and I nodded, "Thank you!"

I don't really talk to others, but sometimes, I think giving people a smile to wear is better than me being afraid to speak, especially when it's those who seem around my age, no I take that back, maybe just kids?

Grabbing the bag, she ran off and I bid her farewell, "Now have a good day at school. And study hard!" I just said to encourage her if anything; she looked really bright.

I wish I could have a light like that, that brightness. Looking at me hand holding the book, I dropped it and opened my hand exposing my palm to me, looking at the cold candle waxed palm of mine, a dark haze began misting out, it's my magic, so dark. . .

But then, clenching my fist and stopping the haze, I dropped my head, "What am I doing with my life, why am I even here today, it's supposed to be my day off?"

Complaining and hitting my head against the counter, I glanced around, turning my head and looking all around to see if anyone was there or if anyone was coming, and seeing no one, I snuck into the back room to hide away.

And sitting in a chair, I closed my eyes, laying my head down... Because holy crap I'm so tired, I need SLEEP!

But then hearing a ring, I slammed my hands on the table, "I take it back, I'm not going to sleep!" I had to make sure it wasn't the boss, only he, other than the school girl comes in this early, so I can't be slacking!

Coming out of the break room, "Sorry, I was using the bathroom!" I came out and went into the main part of the store, it wasn't the big boss who came in, it was a customer, seeing that my face turned even whiter.

Looking at me was a woman, with long frizzy gray hair, caramel skin, and sharp yellow eyes looking at me as if she was staring into the depths of my soul.

And startling me to where I just woke up.

But then she said, "I'm only browsing, no need to rush, young lady," saying it ever so calmly and not brutish like how she looked because she looked like a barbarian...

It calmed my quaking heart, an not saying another word, I nodded my head an made my way back to the counter, but when I did, she was standing there in front of me?!

An shook, I jumped back a little, "You're not from around here are you, missy?" she asked just coming straight to me, but why is she asking me this? Why is she asking?

"Uh... I'm..." not knowing what to say as my hand started to shake, I spoke the truth to her, "I'm a war immigrant," I told her bluntly. . .And hearing me, she nodded her head.

"I get it, the battle of those damn wolves and foxes have been affecting everyone for the last few years, but I had never thought that it would affect anyone from up north"

Not knowing what she meant, "Up north?" I'm confused, but hearing me mumble, "Yeah, up north from the county you hailed from, I can tell by your voice and accent that you're not a native speaker, so that's what I meant, girl"

Putting it together quickly she thought I came from the country above this. . . But where'd she get an idea like that? Although, I think it would be smart to just agree.

But before I could open my mouth and say something to her, "But enough of that, sorry for asking, I know it must be hard when running away from war," she said like she was mocking me for doing it, but then said, "I asked you that, to warn you," wait! So she's going to threaten me!

"There aren't many foreigners here, so–" but as she was talking, and I was trying to be respectful too by listening even if it sounded like a threat, I suddenly paused up.

I smelled something. . .*And through the black contacts she wore, her eyes started shimmering a bright red, as she smelled something so strong, it was. . . Bloody*

It was so sweet, and strong that it filled the entire store with its scent, and then the aroma it gave off after I'd smelled it, it was as if something was drawing me to it.

But then covering my mouth as I drooled, I turned away, and "Sorry, I forgot something in the back!" and ran off as the woman was talking, and watching me run away.

"Huh? What's wrong with her? Was politics too much?"

The lady said, *And coming around from the right side of the counter as they just walked in, a man with really long hair putting on his vest, stepped to the register*

*And yawning as it was really early in the morning and he hadn't even clocked in yet, said to the customer at the counter, "Sorry for the delay, is there someth–" but then he paused as he saw who it was, "Lady Wilson!?"*

*Hearing him, "Do I know you?" she asked, but shaking his head, "No, but my sister is a big fan of your work in economics and politics! Anyway, what brings you here lady Wilson? The Manager's not here but I can relay a-" he started talking but she cut him off, "Actually, there was a young lady here a moment ago," and he instantly understood, "You mean Catherine? Yeah, she's shy, an"*

"I was talking to her, because of the new Immigration Act passed by Congress, but I think I might have. . .Uh, maybe scared her off? Do you think you can check to see if she's alright, and tell her she's not in trouble too?"

*She said thinking that she might have scared Catherine with the idea of deportation, and she hadn't meant that at all, she just wanted to tell her because of the newest act, it might be hard for northerns like her family to pass through and reconnect with her, due to it being placed*

"You actually got someone like Catherine to speak?!" *he was amazed by this politician here, and looking at her in a new light to even be able to pull off a miracle like that, he instantly said,* "Yeah, is that all?" *And she nodded*

"Alright, I'll be right back with you then," *He said rushing off to the back, leaving her and the others who were just browsin, and he thought he could clock in while at it too*

*So leaving the front of the store and going into the back, he opened the door to see Catherine with her hands on the breakroom's table and panting as if she was out of breath, and seeing her like that he laughed, "You know she's not gonna deport you right? Also, so when did you become an immigrant too, haha, wait hey, you alright?"*

*He asked walking up to her as her breathing was irregular and she didn't say a word back, even when he was joking around, knowing it puts everyone in a good mood, that's the only reason he said that to her too*

*But not getting anything back, and approaching her, he reached out his arm to touch her shoulder, "Catherine, seriously, what's wrong?" but when he touched her..*

*Darting around and facing him, she grabbed him by the neck, and in a flash his back slammed against the wall, and looking down at her as she pinned him against it*

*Her eyes glowing a violent red, her canines as sharp as daggers, and her nails sharper than blades, she was a monster, and with blood on her lips, she horrified him*
