Chapter 2: Assignment

"I saw it yesterday, Ivy!" I said as I keep following Ivy. The school hallway is full of students talking to each other. Ivy keeps ignoring what I said about the two girls that I saw in the abandoned house last night.

"Did you not miss your breakfast today, Lilith Barkley?" Ivy asked, taking all textbooks from her locker. "Of course, Ivy Inri Stewart." Saw her struggling to carry her pile of textbooks, I shut her locker.

"Why did you carry all that? With that black thick-rimmed glasses of yours and carrying a pile of textbooks, you are a nerd." Ivy sighed, ignored my remark.

"Hey, I'm your best friend, Ivy. And I'm not pulling a prank here."

"You like to scare everyone, Lily.." Ivy said, speeding her walk. I sighed and grabbed her by the shoulders and turned her around to look at me.

"Yes, I like to scare everyone but I'm not kidding this time. " Ivy didn't look at me, clearly avoiding my gaze. "Lily, we got 5 minutes to get in our class. Put your jokes aside." she said, leaving me behind.

But I'm not kidding..

Ivy and I were greeted with the noise of the students in the room. Students were busy chattering with friends. Sitting in the 4th row with Ivy, waiting for the teacher to come. Ivy is reading a book--a note that she doesn't want to be disturb. The two girls in the abandoned house was still fresh in my mind. It's not that I'm scared, I just had a peculiar feeling about it.

"Good morning, I'm sorry. I'm late." I jolted. "How are you, everyone?" A man around his forties was in front, dressed in casual khaki and white casual dress shirt. A teacher. He looked around, "You there, new here?" he said as he point his fingers at me. I stood up and nod. "Could you introduce yourself?"

"I'm Lilith Barkley. Nice to meet you all." I said, waiting for him to tell me to sit down. Yes, I'm that impatient. "I'm Mr. Miller. Welcome to NorthWestern High, Lilith!" I shot him a subtle smile. "Sit down"

And the class starts.

"Who among you here know about Ted Bundy?" I immediately raised my hand. Exceptionally, no one raised their hands. Mr. Miller motioned me to speak.

"Theodore Robert Bundy or Ted Bundy is known as one of the notorious serial killers. He is charismatic which makes you believe he isn't the type of a person to murder someone. He killed a lot of young women, sexually assault them. After his first murder, young women started to disappear every month. He escaped a lot of trials. Before he died, he admits he killed 30 women. Bundy died by executing him in an electric chair." I said as I sat down.

"So, you really read about Ted Bundy. Okay, how about the unsolved case of a k-pop idol died after he release his first single debut?" I raised my hand again. "Anyone?" Mr. Miller looked around but no one raises their hand.

"Kim Sung-Jae is a k-pop idol and a member of a group called Duex. Its a duo group. After releasing his first debut, he died. " I said and glanced each of my classmates.

"He went to the hotel with his manager, his girlfriend and his back-up dancers. They were drinking that night and his back-up dancers go to sleep while the couple, Kim Sung-Jae and his girlfriend decided to sleep in the living room."

I didn't notice that I'm already hand-gesturing while talking. Talking while hand gesturing helps me. Some people just prefer to talk plainly without hand-gesturing which made me think, how could they do that?

"The manager went to dry his clothes and turn the dryer on for 135 minutes which means 2 hours, and 5 minutes. He was found dead in a hotel, 6 am. Some said that he was dead because of cardiac arrest. After an autopsy, they found needles on his right arm with two chemicals on it. He was injected with animal anesthesia and animal euthanasia. " I continued.

"Some said Kim Sung-Jae is using drugs because of the needles marks. The prime suspect is the girlfriend of Kim Sung-Jae named "Kim", shown she has a behavior of a sasaeng." My classmates is looking at me, interested as I go along.

"Now, sasaseng also means an obsessive fan who stalks or engages in other behavior, invading the privacy of a Korean idol or another public figure. His girlfriend is a medical student and she also killed Kim Sung Jae in the face with a gas gun. The girlfriend left around 3:30 am. Kim denied in the court that she did that to the k-pop idol and was acquitted for lack of evidence. Kim's family is rich and had many political links and possibly use their money to defend "Kim"

"Kim" also blamed the back-up dancers of Kim Sung-Jae that they used drugs and presumably killed her boyfriend. The fans of the k-pop idol sooner found out that "Kim" changed her identity and the police also didn't check the CCTV around the neighborhood which they did a bad job for investigating the whole evidence. The veterinarians where "Kim" bought the animal anesthesia and euthanasia later claim that he/she didn't remember anything about "Kim" buying the anesthesia and euthanasia thus the case remains unsolved" Mr. Miller, amazed and face on the board as he writes something.

Unsolved Cases

"I want to give you an assignment" Student groan in unison, hated the fact that we are given an assignment. "Informative writing is our next topic, I want you to write an informative writing of any unsolved cases" The bell suddenly rang, it's already dismissal. Students starts to gather their textbooks.

"I want you to submit the assignment next week, 1,000 words," he said, watching the students went their way out. Ivy went out first, followed by me. Unsolved Cases….
