chapter one: the strongest system

Gustav looked around in shock as he realized he was no longer walking across a road in the 21st century, but rather standing in a bustling street in a city he didn't recognize. He looked down at his hands, which were now those of a sixteen year old boy.

"What the hell is going on?" Gustav muttered to himself, trying to make sense of the situation.

As he walked through the crowded streets, memories of his past life flooded back to him. He remembered his job as a historian, his failing relationship, and the feeling of being stuck in a rut. And now, he was somehow reincarnated in an alternate universe during World War I, where magic existed and was used to power weapons.

Gustav shook his head, trying to clear the confusion from his mind. He had to focus on the present, and figure out where he was and what was happening.

As he walked, he overheard snippets of conversation that gave him some clues about his new surroundings. Germany was fighting battles on multiple fronts, and though it was holding on for now, if the war continued much longer, the Allies would surely win.

Suddenly, Gustav was hit with a wave of memories that were not his own. They were those of Arnold, a sixteen year old boy who had been walking home from school when he suddenly gained memories from Gustav and the 21st century.

Gustav realized that he had been reincarnated as Arnold, and he quickly ran through his new memories to try and understand his current situation. He learned that he would be sent off to mandatory conscription in just a week's time, as he was German and would be killed if he didn't join the army during wartime.

As he processed this new information, Gustav noticed a blue panel appearing in his field of view, like something out of a video game. The panel read "The Strongest System," and it showed stats and skills such as strength, endurance, speed, intelligence, and magic aptitude.

"I am the system," a voice said in Gustav's head. "I will help you survive this cruel world."

Gustav was amazed by the bizarre development. "This is like a video game," he said out loud, still trying to wrap his head around everything that was happening.

His Masked Knight

"It is futile" Duke Allen spoke, his amber eyes glinting with unwavering arrogance. "How dare you!?" the crude looking bandit growled as he took another spare dagger. "Don't bother" a sharp, clear-cut voice slashed his thoughts. "My my Edgar, you are frightening the poor soul. Look, he is not bothering to attack with his dagger" Duke chuckled, lacing his words with superiority. It only took a slash to paint the gravel and the ground with bright red. The ground also witnessed a 'thump' and a rolling head. "Wipe that cocky smirk off. It's repulsive" the knight spat out, his eyes were filled with fury at the aloofness exhibited by his master. What would have happened if I were late? "That's not how you speak with your Master, but that's okay.." Duke said, closing the distance between him and his knight. "After all, you are" he slightly bent himself to whisper in the ear of his knight "my one-and-only Edgar Radford" his hiss sent sharp tingles through the knight's body. A rush of rosy hue brightened his white cheeks accompanied by a slight throbbing. ***** Aristocracy, a privileged class holding hereditary titles. The class of the most powerful members of society.
