Rebirth (2)

No matter how many minutes passed, Fay could not wake up from this nightmare. The hands staring at her… her very own hands were that of a stranger.

This was not her body. She knew it in her heart.

The smart thing for her to do right now would be to look around, maybe even see what her face looked like, but before she could begin anything, she felt intense pain.

Out of nowhere, her head hurt so much that she had to close her eyes. What she didn't expect was when she closed her eyes, strange images were shown in her mind. It was like a fast-paced movie reel running in her mind, but she didn't recognize the girl in the movie.

It was a small delicate child. She was loved by a pretty woman and a kind looking man that resembled a delicate child. But then the pretty woman disappeared and the kind man started to look weak and on the verge of death.

What stood out the most in the strange movie was although the pretty woman no longer appeared, instead, in her place was a new woman who looked nothing like the child.

There was something eerie about this woman, but she was always hovering by the man's side. Along the way, the child no longer looked delicate but instead started to become pudgy.

There was even a glimpse of an old man in the movie that resembled the pretty woman and the child, who had a broken hearted expression before walking away.

Were these memories that Fay was seeing? But that made no sense. This wasn't her body and she didn't recognize any of the people in the images she saw.

Wait. There was only one way to find out. If she checked the mirror and saw the face she wore, then she would know what it was she saw in her mind.

Since her head no longer hurt and the movie reel in her mind finally stopped, Fei was able to clumsily get out of the floral-scented bed and reach a mirror.

The mirror was long and placed beside a desk. It looked like something a young woman would use to see their reflection, maybe to see what dress she wore.

And at this moment, Fay indeed saw what she wore.

It was a yellow frilly night dress that didn't match her dark hair and grey eyes.

Fay could only sigh.

The small pudgy child in the mirror really was from the strange movie reel she saw in her mind.

This was real.

It wasn't a dream.

She was really in the body of someone else and even worse, she was reverted back to a child. A pudgy child!

Why was she so pudgy?!

It wasn't that Fay had anything against people who were a little pudgy, or a lot pudgy, not at all.

Pudgy people were soft and squishy, the best to hug. It's just Fay was always used to being a slimmer size.

She wasn't a sports fanatic or a health maniac, but she enjoyed how easy she had it in life when it came to anything physical.

The only downside to people who were pudgy was how they disliked physical activities. Their body just wasn't made for all that movement. They were in actual pain.

And now Fay seemed to have that very body that would face these difficulties.

Even so, panicking would not make all of this go away. Fay knew the truth of reality. If she sat here and waited for someone to help her, she would never get anything done.

She was on her own and she had to plan for the future. Especially since the original owner of this body was supposedly about to go down a bad road.

Unfortunately, even if Fay knew this, it was already too late to change some things.

For the past few days, every time she met a maid or someone in the house, she would instantly get a memory flashback and understand who that person was in her life.

At first, she thought she was lucky, with these new memories she could figure things out quickly. Fay thought she could fix everything and save herself by getting along with her grandfather.

But it was already too late, she found out from the maid that he had left upon her request.

She had arrived in this body far too late.

To make matters worse, this information had even reached her stepmother's ears.

"Oh honey, are you missing that man? You shouldn't miss a bad man like him. He's the reason your mother is gone. You have me now. I'll be here to look after you and your father."

No matter how Fay looked at the woman in front of her, she couldn't deny how superficial the woman sounded.

How on earth did this child fall for this woman's trick? Even she could tell how fake the woman sounded. Were children just fundamentally gullible?

Was she also this gullible when she was a child?

"Don't worry, I won't let you get tricked by that evil old man. He's gone far, far away, he won't come and bother you. Okay?"

The fake kindness was oozing out of the woman but there wasn't anything Fay could do at this point. What could a child her age do?

She didn't even know her grandfather's name or contact details. How is she ever supposed to track him down in the future?

She couldn't exactly ask any of the staff. Look what happened when she asked where he was. It seemed like everyone reported to her stepmother.

Who could she even rely on?

She hadn't even seen her father in so long.

But maybe she shouldn't have had such thoughts.

As if the universe had a sense of irony directed her way, she finally did see her father… just not in the way she would have liked.

It was on another night of secretly looking around the house, without the prying eyes of the staff, when she heard slight mumbling sounds from a closed room.

When Fay got closer to the door, she could hear the conversation more clearly. It was her stepmother.

"Madam, do I really need to do this anymore?"

"What do you mean? Are you disobeying my orders?"

"No-no! I just meant… if we feed him any more of this drug, he will die. The original purpose of making him near mentally dead has already been reached. No one will ever be able to cure him. There's no need for any more."
