To say that the chief was upset would've been an understatement. He was livid and that anger was directed towards Abel and Ray since Ace had died on their watch.
"What in the hell happened?" He demanded to know after the situation was reported to him.
A sheet had been placed over the body for the time being and the room was shut and locked until the doctor came and had a look over everything.
The chief had demanded to know what happened after Jack had come rushing in sputtering something about there being a problem with the person they brought in for questioning.
"We don't know anymore than you do right now Chief." Abel responded as he tried to keep his own temper in check. It wouldn't do him any good to blow up on this person.
"Everything was going just fine with the questioning when his body suddenly seized for no appearant reason." Ray added causing the chief to turn and look at him.
"No reason? Did you happen to test and make sure that he wasn't on any drugs since it sounds like he was involved with them?" he asked looking between the two of them. The silence he received in response to him was more than enough of an answer. His hands clenched at his side.
"I can't believe you didn't get him tested before you started!" he boomed, causing everyone except for Abel to flinch.
"There was no evidence that he was on drugs and he even said that he doesn't take them." he responded causing the chief to scoff.
"So you're telling me now that we should just believe whatever comes out these type of people's mouth rather than checking to be sure?" 'these type of people' part of what the chief said rubbed Abel the wrong way and he felt his temper rising.
"We could be held liable for this by his family if they found out about this type of oversight."
"He doesn't have any family." Ray cut-in right after the chief finished speaking.
"You can talk to Harold if you want to know more about his situation, but that's part of the reason why he had been struggling so much because he doesn't have anyone to watch out for him." the detective explained. It was one of the many reasons Harold had tried to step-in and be there for Ace when he could.
"You should watch reacting so strongly around him. I understand how you feel. If you get kicked off the case though, you won't be able to solve anything." Prose warned Abel as the system detected that his level of anger was getting too high.
"I know that already. So why don't you just keep working on coming up with some good news for me?" Abel suggested in response to what the system said.
"I'm not saying there wasn't a mistake made which I take responsibility for or that we should believe everything we're told. I'm just simply saying that based upon the evidence that was in front of us, we acted according with the impression that Ace hadn't been in contact with drugs." Abel clarified to the chief who glanced over at him.
"Personally, I'm not convinced that drugs were behind what happened. Perhaps I'll be proven wrong by the blood tests. However, I think that there's something more going on here, but I'd like you to say what you think the next best step would be once the body is taken care." He hoped the mixture of honesty and respect for his authority would get the other to lay off him. The chief stared at him for a good second as though trying to size him up to see why he suddenly changed his attitude.
"If there are no relatives to contact about what happened. We should wait until the autopsy is done to determine the next step. If it was due to a drug overdose then we will just treat it as an accident. If not, it'll be treated as foul play and a murder connected to the current case." The chief paused for a second before he continued speaking.
"I want the recording of everything he said while you were questioning and a report of who suspects in this case might be. Either way if there's drugs involved, we need to get to the bottom of it and figure out if that's why Victoria was killed or what the real motive was." sounded very much to Abel like exactly what he had been telling the chief what he felt should be going on in the case. Of course though he would have to make it sound like his own idea then that his newly hired subordinate had been right.
"We will get on it right away." Ray assured him.
"The doctor should be here in the next five minutes, once the body is moved I will go back into the room and grab the notes and tape everything was recording on. If it's alright with you Chief, I would like to make a copy of the recording for reference depending on what the results of the autopsy bring up?" The detective asked.
"That's fine, just make sure you're prompt about getting everything done. For now, I don't want this getting out and blowing up into something bigger until we know exactly what's going on. The press would have a field day if they knew someone died during interrogation regardless if they have family to leak it out or not." He replied running his hand through his hair. He just hoped that they would be able to get the body out without making a big fuss about.
"Completely understood chief. Well get on it as quickly as possible." Ray replied.
"Although I'm not thrilled about the idea of keeping a body in our office, perhaps it would be better to move it after night fall?" Abel cut in, making a suggestion that he thought might be suitable to keep the media from finding anything out.
"You might have some good ideas after all." The chief replied after a pause, what could perhaps be called a small smile appearing on his face as he thought about this idea. It would certainly be better to move the body after dark. Less people to see what was going on and it wasn't like they wouldn't be able to do all the tests they needed to do while the body was still in their office.
"Thank you chief. I will be sure to let the doctor know that they'll be working from here today." He didn't appreciate the complisault that the other gave him, but it was better than being yelled at for the time being.
"Good. I would appreciate if everything could be taken care of within the next hour after the doctor has arrived." he told them before he turned to walk away. Once he was certain that he was out of earshot, Abel turned to look at Ray.
"Is he always this uptight or is today a special occasion?" He asked his partner who couldn't hide the smile that appeared on his face when the other asked him this question.
"I think that's just a special occasion since it seems like your personalities clash. He certainly isn't the easiest person to work with however." Ray admitted. If that was the case, Abel's time working at the station was probably going to become much harder though that didn't really matter to him if he could get to the bottom of what happened. He just needed to bide his time and make sure he stayed on until he did. He just hoped that Prose would be able to find some good answers that would help him with this.
