Seeing the puppy was not letting him go, Jin had no choice but to pick up the golden retriever and carried him in his arms like a giant teddy bear. "Let's go." He said to her rather naturally.
She was coming along with them? Sefi was slightly surprised, the brain signals hadn't quite reached down to her limps yet. She didn't move.
"I'll buy you an ice cream," He bribed, "and a coffee."
Well, in that case...why not?
Sefi shrugged her shoulders, got up and dusted the grass off of her clothes before joining them. She was thirsty from the sprint and could do with an ice cream.
The convenience store indeed wasn't too far away, they walked under the blazing sun, it was that hot it felt like they were being slowly baked in a gigantic oven.
Jin was still holding the golden retriever in his arms, but he seemed cool and collected like there was hardly any weight to the giant puppy. Sefi noticed he wasn't even sweating, his pores were almost invisible, she doubted if she held up a big magnifying glass, she would be able to spot it. His skin was flawless.
And there weren't any smelly smells coming off of his body, only the faint scent of Tuscan Leather cologne. It was a scent she was quite familiar with; her brother was a big fan of Tom Ford and she used to buy a bottle for him every year for Christmas.
Only there was a slight difference which she couldn't quite put her fingers on it. Maybe it smelled better on Jin? She wouldn't call it that. It wasn't about who wore it better but Jin's scent seemed to have more of a 'pull' to it, like a small hook that grabbed a girl's attention, whereas when her brother wore it, it was quite clean and comfortable.
She sat on the steps in front of the convenience store with one arm around the golden retriever, and the other hand gently stroking its head as she debated in her head about how perfumes smelled different on different people.
The golden retriever sat beside her expressionless as it glanced into the distance, but the random wagging of its tail from time to time gave away the indication that it was quite enjoying this.
A large black SUV with tinted windows drove past them quietly. Sefi raised her head and looked at it. The only things she could see were her blurred face and the reflection of her white shirt on the windows.
Jin walked out of the store with two cones in one hand and a tray carrying two beverages in the other. Tucked under his arm was a bag of dog biscuits.
She reached over to give him a helping hand by taking the ice cream cones off of his hand. By the time she returned her gaze, the black car had already driven away.
"What were you looking at?" He asked.
"Nothing." Sefi shook her head and licked the ice cream. She clearly felt there was someone inside that car staring at her, but she couldn't see anything inside. Regardless of anything, they were away now.
The chocolate ice cream quickly became the main focus of her attention. The rich taste of cocoa tickled her taste buds, it was silky smooth, sweet with a slight bitterness and melted in her mouth like kisses of a butterfly. No wonder girls ate chocolate ice cream when they were in a bad mood, she thought to herself. It really had the power to brighten one's mood.
The golden retriever saw his owner was back, he immediately dropped the previous cold demeanour and seemly forgotten it had been in a bad mood with him. It started to nudge Jin's leg with its soft little head and wagged its tail in excitement.
Jin squatted down smiling and stroked the puppy's head and its shiny fur coat over and over again. "Good boy." He praised.
"Is he always this excited every time he sees you?" Sefi asked in surprise. If she didn't know better, she would've thought Jin had been gone for days, rather than just a few minutes.
Jin nodded with a smile, "Yes, every time he sees me, he always gives me the biggest welcome, without fail."
"You just went in for literally a few minutes." She was flabbergasted, "he was probably just excited to see the dog biscuits."
"Not necessarily, let's say if I was going out and had just closed the door, and then remembered that I'd forgotten something then came back in, he would still exactly the same, he is always happy to see me." As he said that, he tore open the bag of dog biscuits without hesitation. The golden retriever leaned against him, stretched its head out, it opened its mouth wide, eager to receive the treat.
Sefi wanted to do an experiment to see if it was really true. She would open and close the door repeatedly and see if the puppy will still remain excited after one hundred times. It would probably pass out from the exhaustion, she thought, chuckling to herself evilly. God, someone please stop her, it was too funny.
"What are you grinning about?" Jin teased, taking a dog biscuit and putting it in front of the puppy's mouth.
"Nothing." She immediately snapped herself out of her daydream and licked the ice cream again to avoid eye contact, feeling slightly embarrassed that he had read her evil thoughts.
The golden retriever lowered its head to Jin's palm, took the dog biscuit and chewed it surprisingly gracefully.
"Do you want to feed him?" Jin asked, handing over a biscuit.
Sefi took it and did the same. Holding out her hand, she saw the puppy bowed its head and opened its mouth wide, practically swallowing half of her small hand in one bite, and when it raised its head again, the biscuit was gone.
She stared at her wet fingers and was amazed beyond words. How could it take away the biscuit so accurately without bitting her hand off or hurting her?
