Chapter 26: Promises

“Why do you look like you’re in more pain than I am.”

I had been trying to lighten the dreadful pall that had fallen over the room since Valen and I had been left alone, and also trying to distract myself from the painful contractions that ran along the length of my torso.

My skin felt hot and clammy, but Valen and Meredith kept trying to bundle me under a mountain of blankets because ‘my temperature kept dropping’. I wasn’t sure how long ago I’d been transported to the clinic and the blinds in the room barred any possibility of natural light intruding.

It must have been a while now, though, because I was exhausted, and if not for the stabs of pain that interrupted me, I would have drifted off long ago. But as exhausted as I felt, Valen looked ten times worst.

His skin, usually a healthy, glowing bronze, looked pale, and there were shadows under his eyes. Instead of lightening his countenance, my words seemed to have the opposite effect.
