Horyu nodded, his eyes still on Zabuza. "Understood, Sensei. But Gato was a cancer to this land. His removal, while drastic, is a step towards healing for these people." His voice was calm, the tone of someone who had seen and understood more than his years would suggest.
Zabuza, overhearing their conversation, grunted in acknowledgment. "You've got guts, kid. And brains. Not a bad combination." His voice was gruff, but the edge of hostility was gone. He sheathed his sword, the action slow and deliberate, a sign that the immediate threat had passed.
Horyu carefully withdrew Chucky from Haku's body, the blade slick with blood yet dangerously close to the young boy's heart. His movements were deliberate, each motion calculated to minimize further harm. As he freed the sword, Horyu swiftly retrieved a potion from his inventory. He took Haku gently, a surprising tenderness in his touch, and checked the boy's pulse. A deep, relieved sigh escaped him as he felt the steady beat of life beneath his fingers. But aligning with Shisui meant navigating a web of Uchiha politics and expectations, a game Horyu wasn't sure he wanted to play. It was tempting, dangerously so, but it also carried the risk of losing himself to Madara's dark legacy.
Naruto's path seemed the most straightforward, a fight against the darkness, side by side with the village's traitor who used to aspired to be its greatest leader. It was the path of the hero, but Horyu knew all too well the price of heroism in the shinobi world. And then there was the Path of Independence, the freedom to carve his own way, to make choices unbound by the heavy chains of legacy and destiny. It was an uncertain road, but it offered something the others didn't—true freedom.
His musings were interrupted by Kurenai's voice, her tone a mix of concern and command. "We should move. Our mission hasn't ended yet." Horyu nodded, his gaze lingering on the carnage around them. The dead thugs, the mist slowly dissipating, and the lingering scent of blood painted a grim picture of the ninja world's reality. It was a world where life and death were traded like currency, where allegiances were as fickle as the wind, and where power was the ultimate arbiter.
As they began their trek back, Horyu's mind was on the rest of the quest.
